import a newly bought 2nd hand car from Italy

Hello

I got a job in Zurich area, will be relocating with the whole family in May. I have recently bought (few days ago actually) a 2nd had car worth around 35k Euros.

What kind of import tax will I have to pay?

Thanks!

12% (8% VAT, 4% customs), so around CHF 4500.

For an alternative point of view, have a look at: https://www.ch.ch/en/importations-cars-switzerland/ . Its relevant if the car is 6 months old more and you are importing it as part of your personal possessions.

The car is 3 years old, but i own it for less than a month. I'm still not clear whether I have to pay VAT and duty taxes or not.

yes you do.
It is from when you took possession of the car / moved to Zurich(get your permit).
You do have a years time to change the plates though (import it).

Re: import a newly bought 2nd hand car from Italy

What if I circulate in Switzerland for 6 months with my italian plate and then I import it?

I just feel the pinch of paying VAT twice.

Re: import a newly bought 2nd hand car from Italy

Here it is direct from the Swiss Customs Administration:
http://www.ezv.admin.ch/zollinfo_pri...x.html?lang=en
See the PDF Files on the right margin.
The declaration you sign here makes it clear that the car has to have been used by you for more than 6 months in the country you are coming from.
It appears you can import stuff up to two years after moving here, but I can't see if that helps you to avoid the payment of customs duty.

Re: import a newly bought 2nd hand car from Italy

You have almost a year to sort it out or sell it, by which time it will have depreciated (on paper at least) if you keep it. Hopefully the job goes well and you, being a car fan, will want a better/newer/faster model, etc. Typically your model may sell for less in Switzerland anyway. You could sell it in Italy, loose some, but buy one here for less than you paid, and avoid the 4.5k that way. Check autoscout.ch. Some really cool stuff for that money. You can also trade it in with one of these export auto handlers, perhaps swapping it for a Swiss car, or two swiss cars (a lot can change in a year!).

If the car is leased in Italy you may be better off terminating.

Main thing is, chill, relax, enjoy the best scenery, your new machinery, new lifestyle, don't stress over the charges. Dream of your next car...

Of course you don't - you are Italian - you don't have to pay any tax you don't want to.

That is unfair, and a shot below the belt. Italians are artists that pay their taxes.

No, it has to be owned for 6 months BEFORE you move here.

He would have to put the car on Z plates which have 100% insurance loading.

The car? I looked around and for the same model/year/mileage I'd have to pay quite a bit more in CH, ergo even if I have to pay taxes it's going to be the same as having it bought in Switzerland.

I should expect plenty of these cheap stereotypes coming to CH.

Re: import a newly bought 2nd hand car from Italy

There is a reason why they are stereotypes. take a joke , you'll get by much easier.... .

And if the car is the same price in CH after import well then it is not that big of a loss (Do keep in mind an import goes for less when selling..... .)

So keep the plates Italian for a year and then import it. The value will have drastically gone down and so will the cost to import it. And you get to drive a year cheaply with Italian roadtax and insurance. So in the end you will save a bit here and there.
