Can a Foreigner Buy a Car and Drive it Here?

Hi I have both Swiss and Canadian passports but I don't live here. I am just travelling around Europe for the summer. I want ot buy a van here, and then travel mostly outside the country for a few months. Then leave the van with a relative to sell maybe.

Is that possible? What do you think?

Or perhaps Germany if you know the rules? Cheaper, but then I have to get there etc.

Also, how the Swiss cisitzenship can help out that would be great.

Thanks!

No idea, but think you have left off what nationality your Driving Licence is?

as may factor into it.

Re: Can a Foreigner Buy a Car and Drive it Here?

Regardless of which country you're in, you will need a permanent address at which the vehicle would be registered. I don't know the German rules, but in CH you would also have to have a residents permit or ID card with that address.

I would guess that as you have Swiss nationality you could simply register at a friend's address and use that, but I'm not sure of the legality of doing so. You would also/only need to change your licence to a Swiss one if you planned to stay and continue driving for more than a year.

What is the maybe? Are you thinking of just giving it to the relative to keep when you leave? Why not just register your van in the name of your relative to begin with?

You can try export plates with a German car.

In Greece I had to declare in which the country the car was exported to, but to some online places that issue German export plates, I have never seen that being mentioned. So you take a German car, take export plates (up to a year, and insurance is included in the cost - liability only of course), and then you either sell it to someone outside Germany, or you even scrap it if it's a total beater.

I would do some research towards that direction if I were you...

Someone from the Forum bought my BMW, collected in ZH with German export plates & drove it to Poland. The plates came from Lorrach that morning.

I actually DO have a Swiss drivers license and an address from relatives to use here.

I don't have any plans to register here course that I actually live here. I'm planning to spend about Fr.7000 on the van. I would perhaps leave it with a relative to sell it when I go back to Canada. That would be maybe in October. Or I might just leave it in the garage somewhere for next year.

Also if anyone has any advice on buying a van from Germany that might also really help me out a lot if they're cheaper. Thanks!

Also if there any experts here on can conversions that would be awesome! I am looking at the citron jumper or a renault or a Ford transit or maybe a Mercedes. I'm going to do just the basics with the bedframe and buy some sort of wooden boxes to sit on and make some sort of makeshift table or something.

Re: Can a Foreigner Buy a Car and Drive it Here?

ok the newest thing is I found a van in DE online but it says it is only available for businesses or export. It's EUR 2000.00 cheaper than the same van private. So, I guess I can perhaps export it to Switzerland? Hope it's not too hard... any thoughts would be appreciated. It's EUR 6500 vs EUR 8500 for the same van with more kms.

My daughter lives in LA, has a scooter registered here in her name, no problem, she uses my address, her name.

There shouldn't be any problems with the plates, but do consider a high import tax if you want to get from D.

A 6500 EUR car has 800 EUR (payable in CHF) import tax.

But for export only normally means some issues which make the car unfit for most contries, unless serious money is invested to fix it.
