How much rust for MFK?

Hello all,

An Italian mate has a nice but old Merc (from around 2000 I think) that is just starting to bubble up on the rear arches. The car is otherwise mechanically sound (and he really likes it) and due for an MFK in around 9 months.

I did a quick search and it looks like if the rust is just on the surface (not structural, and not broken through) then it should be ok for the MFK? Otherwise he will look to get rid sooner rather than wait until the test.

Does anyone have any experience of getting a slightly tatty car through the MFK?

Cheers!

Re: How much rust for MFK?

I've driven a 2001 Bmw with 280k on the clock right through. I was importing it also so it got a good check. Had a couple bubbles here and there but not noticable. Passed with flying colors.

Why not have the surface rust addressed now before it gets worse and no longer is surface rust? All it takes is a bit of sanding, colormatched paint and a bit of skill....

Re: How much rust for MFK?

Ta for the advice.

To be honest I think he doesn't want to do anything with it - it's a pretty old Merc with high KM and not worth fixing so I think he just wants to drive it into the ground...if he can get away with it then I guess he'll just leave it as is. I suppose he could take it to Italy for a quick sand and filler/weld job.

Even if you catch rust early enough, it's still a pain, and it always comes back. I used to have a Primera that slowly dissolved - every MOT i had to chop more and more bits off/out and I was fighting a losing battle...in the end I gave up...

Re: How much rust for MFK?

It really depends on the Merc in question, rule of thumb for rust is "can you poke a screwdriver through?" if yes get the repair done and especially if the merc is worth it, (look at autoscout24) then go for it.

Re: How much rust for MFK?

Surface rust is easily and cheaply fixed. If he doesn't care, DIY. It won't look worse than rust, or at least not much worse.

Why not spend 30 or 50 CHF to get some sanding paper and a colormatched spray can? It's not going to be mint, but it's going to be better than rust and he'll have nothing to worry about.

Rust cannot be in structural places, eg in beams/fram. Couple sposts in the doors or outer shell is fine,

If you can see the road under your feet, get one of those after-market rubber mats.

The thing with most cars is that rust is rarely just surface rust. Water collects in closed profiles *inside* bodywork elements. The rust that you see outside is often already much deeper than you could possibly expect. A quick patch is barely a cosmetic fix which will last for some months, a year if you are lucky. A proper fix is much more throughout and not just a 50 CHF paint job.
