Rental car prices - what a difference

So just booked the renter, for trip back to Blighty in the summer, pickup LGW.

You've really got to search around for a good deal, as there is such a difference in prices - even using the same search company, but on different country domains.

About a month ago, I told my wife that I would not book direct and look through Kayak, this time. She thought she would be helpful and do it from work and used Kayak.ch, which then routed her to Rentalcars.com. She booked one, and when I compared it was over 100chufs more than doing it with Kayak.co.uk - again through Rentalcars.com.
So I told her to cancel her booking.

Unfortunately, the rebooking got overlooked, and I finally got around to doing it, but expected, now, not to get the same deal, because of a months delay.

In fact for an Astra size (compact) for 16 days in August, Budget (who was the original provider) wanted 852, booking direct. Booking exactly the same car, for the same dates, again with Budget, but through Rentalcars.com came to 314.
Even with full premium excess protection it is less than 400 - plus pickup from the terminal desk.
This actually equates to about CHF 576 - my wife's original booking was well over CHF 700.

Yes, I had to pay in advance to get that price, but still have a cancellation/amendment option.

I also realise that I could have probably got it down even cheaper, by using a lesser known rental company, and by taking a bus ride to Horley for pickup, but I'm happy with that price, to pay for convenience and use a known company.

A separate insurance for excess protection is also not worth me getting as my trips back are not frequent.

Re: Rental car prices - what a difference

Yes you`re right - there are some huge differentials of rental car prices - bordering on the ridiculous sometimes.
However, for what it may be worth - I nearly always book through holidayautos.de and usually find prices a lot cheaper.
Just watch out for those base `at the airport` and `not at the airport` as the latter usually involves shuttle bus -which needs to be considered especially on the return - can add considerable time.

Yes, I also use search sites to find offers then I go direct on the dealer to get the best deal. Same with flights, hotels, always try to cut the middle-man
Doesn't work all the time though
