Fairly common, I believe.

My wife (before she was) did it, back in the early 90's in Cali.

I've just googled RV rental and Great Lakes and it gives loads of returns.

CruiseAmerica is well known and seem to do a good job. I have some knowledge of the western Lake Superior area when you get into the planning phase and need some recommendations.

My OH did the Canadian part of the Great Lakes circle tour a few years ago (not by RV though) so can also help.

It doesn't suck.

Yeah, but ..... at least using the link you can enter your dates and requirements to get an indication of cost - which was one of your questions. I would think that current prices from a supplier would be more accurate, than relying on someone who may have done it, sometime in the past, and trying to remember what they paid.

Just sayin'

We looked into it fairly recently as we though it would be a good way to see some of the US rather than stay in motels and hotels like we have done before but the thing that put us off was that, on investigation, all the places that one can park an RV for the night (and which we would have used rather than the side of the road as we have kids) can get booked up months in advance.
You need to reserve in advance.

Basically this means you lose the flexibility in staying where you want for as long as you want that you thought'd you'd gain in having an RV.

And with the RV, you lose the chance to stay in some of those really unique hotels that made our last trip so memorable.

Re: Camping Car / RV rental in USA

As a kid, we made a cross-country RV trip in July-August. My main recollections of the Great Lakes area were the fireflies and the mosquito swarms (and the accompanying heat and humidity). After that trip, I would not choose July as the time to visit that area while camping. Hotel/motel it in summer. Head west for camping.
