Bus tickets:Does anyone care?

First of all, a declaration: not here to game the system/break laws.

I just spent a buttload of money on a monthly bus pass, halb tax, Gleis 7 etc and this guy from Greece I'm working with told me that for the bus no one cares if you have a ticket. Just hop on, hop off. My reaction was, of course, 'wtf?' But then I noticed a lot of people just hop on, hop off. Maybe they all have passes or a GA. But I'd like to know the legal facts related to this. What happens if you're on a bus without a ticket? Can I expect some good ol schadenfreude after seeing my smug Greek friend in trouble soon?

Re: Bus tickets:Does anyone care?

They do random checks from time to time. Be prepared to pay big time ( around 100chf) if you get caught.
It depends if you think it's worth taking the risk or not. Personally I prefer to buy a ticket.

Re: Bus tickets:Does anyone care?

They care.
Most of the people you see hopping on and off the bus will have some kind of pass or ticket.
Just when you least expect it the ticket inspectors will get on your bus to make sure everyone is paying their way, those who have not will be hit with a fine.
So better, in my opinion, to be honest.

That's my philosophy too.
Didn't know about the inspectors though. Thanks.

.... and when they come, they come en masse - entering from all exits, so no one can escape, or work their way down the bus to hop out another door.

Re: Bus tickets:Does anyone care?

There are serious efforts made by ZVV in Zurich to ensure compliance. One of the few places in the world where in the long run you are for sure worse off not paying. There were days where I got checked 2-3 times a day or up to 5 times a week. Sometimes they shut down entire stops, show up with 10-15 staff and police checking everyone getting off/on and on the bus. fees are CHF 80,- first time you get caught, and for subsequent times the fee increases to CHF 120,-

You can be sure of your Schadenfreude (at least in Zurich)... but then, shouldn't we give the Greeks a break?

Considering where he's working, he's doing quite well. So no, not this guy. >

you even get finned the same amount if you have a 1/2 tax ticket and have not got your card with you as I hear it happened to " a friend of mine"

Your Greek guy just got lucky - good for him.

I have no idea what routes you use, but I use the ZVV every day without exception, and in my 9 years here I can still count on two hands the amount of times I've been "controlled" on trams or buses.

That's not to say I would suggest that people stop buying tickets - if they do then karma will come and find them, declare that they're arseholes of the worst kind, and then inform the ZVV who'll happily fine them.

The whole transport system in Switzerland is efficient and easy to use because it's built on trust. If too many people abuse that trust then we'll end up with a transport system like the UK has - and we most certainly don't want that.

Re: Bus tickets:Does anyone care?

In Lausanne, they most certainly do check. One never knows. They catch people all of the time. Just pay the damn money and consider it your investment in a country-wide transport system that is considered the best in the world.

Re: Bus tickets:Does anyone care?

@Oblio

"Your friend's" halbtax issue, it seems, was handled improperly.

If you HAVE a valid halbtax but forgot it at home, they take your details and you can present your halbtax within a certain period of time to any cashier at train stations, etc.

Then, no fine is levied - just a small admin fee of CHF 5,- if I remember correctly.

Unless "your friend" just paid the 1/2 price without owning a halbtax. Then, I'd recommend you to have a word with "your friend"

It was years ago when "my friend" had no idea what way was up in this little country so fine was paid at half (after much deliberation) and all was forgotten. Now halb tax being carried everywhere

Or so "my friend" tells me

Re: Bus tickets:Does anyone care?

I've been checked on the bus in Thalwil three times and once in Horgen (2 year time period). They definitely do care and will fine you. And they are always "under-cover" - not obvious like the SBB ticket takers on the train. It's always a bit startling when it happens. So I'm going to guess that you will get to see your friend pay - if he ever tells you about it!

no you don't. Like the time I forgot my GA and paid 5 francs fine.....if you have ID then they can look it up immediately now. I even got them to extend the validity of the receipt they gave me as I was going away for the weekend and did not want to have to go through the process again

Re: Bus tickets:Does anyone care?

I live on the top of a hill and often use the bus to get home (instead of getting out of breath by walking ). The bus passes the train station stop and is so timed of course that five minutes after the train comes along the bus also appears. Lots of people who used the train get on the bus as do a lot of people who have just been shopping and who, after two or three stops, get off. I've often wondered 'these people with their shopping bags, have they a ticket?'. Well, for the first time recently when I was on the bus there was a control 'gang' at work. Everyone had a ticket as required. Surprise. Many people have GAs of some sort.

Re: Bus tickets:Does anyone care?

You've got to remember that the ticket inspectors names are all 'Murphy' ... when you don't have a ticket, they will make an inspection and you will be caught.
But when you do have a ticket, then you won't see them !!!

In Fribourg, it's the opposite; the TPF (bus) inspectors wear a uniform of sorts, whereas the regional train inspectors are plain clothes.

It's the same here. The bus inspectors all have black bomber jackets with EPG in huge letters on them. That coupled with the fact that they all seem to be built like brick sh*thouses means you can spot them a mile away. They always catch somebody though as they block all the bus doors so there's no escape for anyone already on there.
Train inspectors are all incognito and a much rarer breed ( at least around here).

Re: Bus tickets:Does anyone care?

In Basel, they seem to do a Blitz every 4-6 months. Same tactics.

BLT introduced this app end of last year and it is great. buy your ticket from your phone.

https://itunes.apple.com/ch/app/tnw-...4404?l=en&mt=8

Technically you are supposed to buy before getting on, but a few times now, when the tram was right there, it has saved me 15-20 minutes while I fiddled for change and had to wait for the next one.
