Driving in US with Swiss License

Hello,

We are planning a trip to Florida in June and want to know if we can drive on a Swiss license or do we need an International Drivers Permit. If we do need an IDP where do you get one?

Thanks
Ashley

Re: Driving in US with Swiss License

Your Swiss license is fine. I've rented many cars in the US on the basis of my Swiss license alone.

Re: Driving in US with Swiss License

Same here, been renting cars and driving every vacation in California for the past 20 years with nothing more than my Swiss Driver's License despite the fact that I'm American.
Stores in the States even accepted my Swiss License as identification when making a credit card purchase which was ridiculous with the old blue paper licenses since they look like something that was home made..!

Re: Driving in US with Swiss License

Wow, they wouldn't accept my license as ID there, I had to give my passport. They just looked at my Swiss license and couldn't understand what it was.

But for driving and renting a car, absolutely no problem - nobody batted an eye when presented with my Swiss license, despite my very obvious American accent

So glad to hear that. We'll be renting a car in the US next week with Swiss licenses - I still have my US license if necessary, but my husband's got only his Swiss one now.

Thanks!

Re: Driving a rent car with in the USA with the swiss permit?

It's been a while, but the last time I wanted to rent a car in the U.S. with a Swiss driver's license I asked the rental company and they wanted to see an International Driver's License. That was easy to get at my local motor vehicles bureau here, some sort of standard Swiss fee for pushing paper under 100 bucks as I recall.

Re: Driving a rent car with in the USA with the swiss permit?

It is not a problem.

But very stricly speacking you would also need a international drivings license according to the Geneva convention on road traffic.

(Not to be confussed with the Vienna convention on road traffic which was not ratified by the U.S. of A. and defines a slightly different international drivings license)

Re: Driving a rent car with in the USA with the swiss permit?

I rent cars in the US frequently - last time was two weeks ago - my Swiss drivers license is all I've ever needed.

(I'm a US citizen, but that shouldn't matter - I no longer have a US driver's license.)

Ditto here. Albeit a bit longer than 2 weeks ago for me.

Re: Driving a rent car with in the USA with the swiss permit?

My hubby has always just used his Swiss license, no probs. Tip: book before you get there and state your place of residence is here. You'll get better insurance cover included than if you just walk up to the counter there.

Re: Driving a rent car with in the USA with the swiss permit?

Qucik tip, if possible when filling out any forms or calling to reserve a car, try to NOT mention you hold a Swiss driver's license. If it is possible, just say you have one. Rental cars are priced based on the origin of the driver and other details.

If you rent a car from the air port, on the French side at Bahle-Mulhouse, you will be charged higher if they know you are Swiss, then EU.

If you fly into the USA, arrive for the car, and they try to charge you more when they realize you have a Swiss origin one, you can put up a fuss, stating you were not informed of this at the time of booking, and so on.

I hold a Swiss driver's license, but originally a US one, that I converted when I arrived here. When I informed them at the desk, in fact I hold a US one, but had that one and thought it was enough, they will charge you the US rate. This is a little scam, insurance can be too(visa cards often have car rental insurance built into being a member, I had no insurance on a rental once, then was told I would have a 4000 US dollar bill. Called Visa, and they stepped in with this info-You should contact them directly before though you decide not to take insurance and make sure), make sure you get the same rate as you would get if you were a US or EU driver in the USA.

I rented last month in the US, on my Swiss licence, no problems at all through Avis and the price included all insurance and excess

Re: Driving a rent car with in the USA with the swiss permit?

They are interested to sell more insurance, upgrade etc....than checking if it's a swiss license. Rented without any problem but had to resist and insist that I didn't want any upgrade (was Herz).

Also your own car insurance may cover car rental ,but you have to inform yourself before renting

Re: Driving a rent car with in the USA with the swiss permit?

I have three driver's licenses from 3 different continents. Last summer, I used my Swiss DL when I rented a car in the US and my US DL when I rented a car in Sweden, I don't rent cars very often though.
For lowest rates, make sure you book online.
