driving from Zurich to Istria and back - summer tips, please?

We intend driving from Zurich to Istria and back during the summer holidays. Is anyone familiar with this route, please?

We absolutely do not want to drive via Milan.
And we already know for sure that we will not be driving through in one stretch, because in both directions we want to take it easy, have time for a break, maybe a view, maybe even a swim along the way. Therefore we will stop for a night on outbound journey, and another night on the way back.

So far, we’re intending to sleep over in Innsbruck (where we have accommodation) on the way there. And on the way back, (which is less planned, as yet) taking just a few hours (yes, just a few… that’s the max. ability/tolerance of the group) in Venice and then heading north, stopping for another night.

I’d be very grateful for any practical travel tips, warnings, comments/suggestions on the routes. Also any knowledge about special activities or views (whatever should not be missed) on the way.

Thank you very much.

In the summer Italian autostrada can be full and quite expensive.
Avoiding Milan does make for an hours longer journey.

It looks like there are 3 major routes are in question,

actually, hitting Milan over this short part of the ring should not be too bad, I recommend morning for that. You can cut out some or all of the ring - I tend to cut as much out if I go to Linate.

The road through Veneto has the Tutor system along it and it is active and will send fines to Swiss-registered cars as far as I know. But if you speed, do it in one day because you cross midnight and get caught again and you get 2 fines

Hi
i did the same route last year through gottard and via milan. Milan is easy as you don't go near the city and the roads will be ok. You get slowed down at the gottard and the border. Only problem is I personally find the long motorway between the border to venice to be really boring. on the way back, was stayed at lake garda for a few days and then took time to go over the gottard rather than through it which was really great.

you could do the munich, austria, slovenia route. I will try this route end of next week, stay the night on lake bled (to swim etc). downside is austria is apparently many tunnels which is also boring.

pm me if you need anything else (you pm'd me already about the cleaner)

thanks,

coming back last year I followed tomtom. Udine, Lienz, Innsbruck. I think there were a couple of 10eur toll tunnels, plus the 10day vignette (15eur?).

I think it's a big mistake (and 14hours with no traffic) and will not be doing it again.
