Help! I hit a parked car!

I hit a parked car today and I have no idea what I should do. I left a note in Google-translate french, but was I supposed to go find this person? It was at my son's school, but people park there from 4 different places. I waited until school started, but no moms came out. I will go back to pick up my son, but I just don't know what the protocol or law is regarding this. I want to do the right thing. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Help! I hit a parked car!

You call the police, and wait for them to come.

You do not move your car until they show up.

Same as for any accident.

Re: Help! I hit a parked car!

Note the plates, contact your insurer, let them deal with it.

If you've left a note with your contact details on the car, there is little more you can do.

Re: Help! I hit a parked car!

Call your insurer and give them the details of what happened and the license plate of the other car. You should do that as most insurers require you to inform them asap of an event. They will also instruct you how to deal with it.

If you left a number on your note you may get a call from the owner of the other car - and then you just forward him to your insurer and they deal with it.

P.S. And taking some pictures of the damage may be wise so there is no room to argue afterwards. Your insurer will probably ask you that too.

Re: Help! I hit a parked car!

Nice of you to be nice enough to own up to your mistakes, my car was hit last week on a bluezone damaging front bumper and wing. No note left.
This week I rented a private parking space....

Re: Help! I hit a parked car!

I hit a parked car when I was in Switzerland and I just left a note under a wiper and got a call later.

Discussed it with the guy later then informed insurance and that was that.

He was really grateful that I left a note at all so I'd ignore all the 'wait an hour' 'inform your insurance immediately' 'phone the police' 'phone your legal insurance' comments.

Re: Help! I hit a parked car!

This is a parking accident guys.

Why the fixation with calling the police?! All they do is try to find fault and issue a fine.

If it is "dink" then there really is no need!

Photos, report, hand over to insurance.

Because the driver left the accident without giving the other driver the insurance details, EF driver could be charged with a hit & run, which is a VERY serious offence. If the EF driver can personally give the other driver the insurance and driver & owner details, then it should not be necessary to call the police.

But what does the other driver do, when he returns and finds the car damaged & a note saying "I did it" - often the citizens here will call the police, and then the trouble starts.

In Munich I gave the other driver my original motoring insurance green card. The police still prosecuted me for "Fahrerflucht" which carries 7 points, the highest possible (because I had left the accident scene, without the other driver's complete satisfaction). The judge threw the case out, as the other driver had all my details, and he should be satisfied. But it took 10 days before I received my license again, during which time I could not drive. Yes this was in Germany, but the laws are the same there as here! You must be careful!

Re: Help! I hit a parked car!

I was recently involved in such a situation but i did not leave a note on the car because somebody can misuse it. i tried to find out the person from the internet and luckily for me, the car was from a company i could find on the internet, quickly phoned them and found out the owner of the car in 20 mins. then i explained him the situation and told him that my insurance will contact him on the next day. then i called my insurance and announced the event and they dealt with the other party.

I think if you cant find the owner of the other car, you can go to the nearest police station and announce the damage caused. it is very important that somehow the other party must be reached, if not, the police must know the event. otherwise the other party can complain a hit and run case against you to the police if there is a witness.

but leaving a note on the car with my phone no and name, i will never do that.

cheers

I'm sorry for the bad experience, but the judge threw the case out which suggests that the police were being overzealous (which I agree they were).

Contact details, licence plates, photos, call the insurance company and log the incident - this will prove that there is no hit & run as you have started the process before the police (assuming they ever do) catch-up.

You all seem to forget that the police will charge the EF driver for driving without due care, and possibly for leaving the accident, if they catch up before the insurance question is solved. Someone must stay with the damaged car until the owner returns.

You only are obliged to call the police if someone is injured. If you're responsible for an accident and no-one is hurt and the other person agrees, then really don't bother as all that happens is you get a fine and possibly a short ban.

Er no. She left a note. She hasn't said anything about what was on the note. Hopefully it wasn't "I dinged your car and everyone around me thinks I'm leaving my details, but I'm not".

Only if the owner is an unreasonable git and goes to the police despite the nice note explaining everything with all contact details. Even then the police are likely to treat things pragmatically, and tell the owner to stop bothering them. Worst case, the other driver gets a fine. I think you're really overstating the case.

To the OP - do what Carlos said and stop worrying.

Re: Help! I hit a parked car!

The law does not say you have to wait as long as nobody is injured.

Quote:
(Google Translated) https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifi...lation/74.html

Section 4: event of an accident

Art. 51

1 If an accident occurs, in which a motor vehicle or bicycle is involved, all parties must stop immediately. You have to ensure as far as possible for the safety of traffic.

2 Are people hurt, so all participants have to provide help, bystanders, in so far as it is reasonable for them. The participants, mainly the driver have to notify the police. All stakeholders, including also co-moving have to participate in the determination of the facts. Without the consent of the police, they may only leave the accident scene, as far as they need help themselves, or to summon help or the police.

3 If only material damage incurred, the injuring party shall immediately notify the injured party and to indicate the name and address. If this is not possible, he shall immediately notify the police.

4 In case of accidents at level crossings, the parties to notify the Railway Administration immediately.
You have to notify the other party with your name and address. If it is not possible you need to notify the police, but it doesn't say you need to stay there. Leaving a note and calling the police to say you've done this would fulfil the legal requirement.

Taking photos would of course be a sensible precaution.

Re: Help! I hit a parked car!

The EF driver has to make every effort to contact the driver: asking the neighbours etc. If the owne cannot be contacted, then you have to go to the police.

Oh I forgot, EF rules take precedence over Swiss laws don't they! Good bye and good luck.

No one is saying that. They are saying your understanding and interpretation of the law is possibly not correct.

Leaving a note does not pass a "Notify" as mandated by the law.

I know some cases where people were prosecuted for leaving the scene of an accident. Loss of license is not just an option.

Re: Help! I hit a parked car!

Let's be reasonable here, I haven't even seen my car for a good 5-6 days. If someone is waiting for me there, they've been waiting for long, that's for sure.

People calling the police because they touched happens all the time in the Zurich ring road, and is causing unmeasurable pain to the rest of the people trying to get to work/home. I've seen it too many times, no big damage, cars easily driveable somewhere safe, and people just stand there doing nothing other than waiting for the cops to do nothing else than issue fines because why the hell not?

And if someone hits a parked car in a busy narrow road, should the rest of the neighbourhood just wait for the cops to show for whatever reason? Call the insurance, tell them you had a fender bender and give them the license plate. They should be able to at least reach the other insurer and notify them, so the owner can then by notified in turn.

All official and documented/logged, all done, no reason to waste any more time.
