6 years in CH, Indian driving licence

Hi There, I am living in Switzerland for last 7 years having Indian driving licence. I want to apply for Swiss Driving licence. I don't know what to do and where to start. Can any one suggest me.

Many thanks in advance.

Through the magic of google. https://www.ch.ch/en/driving-licence/

You'll need a new licence entirely as you should have exchanged your licence within 12 months of arrival. You should be delighted that you've not been caught and accept the additional tests with grace...

Wasn't so hard to find this yourself was it?

Go to the Strassenverkehrsamt/Gemeindehaus (town hall) and be prepared to have to redo your driving permit. You are only allowed to drive here up to one year with your "old" driving license.

Doesn't matter unforunately, will still need to do it from scratch. Mention that you have the Indian licence to them but I wouldn't expect anything.

Re: 6 years in CH, Indian driving licence

Searching for the Federal court ruling to shut all does doom sayers.

Here it is: http://www.servat.unibe.ch/dfr/bger/...C_49-2014.html
It sys that if one wants do exchange a driving license after five years the authorities may request a test drive (NOT a full driving license test) if the applicant can not show/prove sufficient driving practice for the last five years.

But as Indians have to do the test drive anyway, nothing changes in this regard.

And here the relevant ASTRA Kreisschreiben: http://www.astra2.admin.ch/media/pdf...-30_2591_d.pdf

PS: Your Indian license must be valid.

Thanks, I did not get you correctly.you mean I can skip the written test? Only test drive? where can I schedule the test drive, with Road traffic and Schifffahrtsamt Bern?

Re: 6 years in CH, Indian driving licence

See here.

http://www.pom.be.ch/pom/de/index/st...rausweise.html

Fill in the Form, get a photo, go to an optician for a simple sight test, and the go, with passport, Ausländerausweis, permit, and your original Indian driving license to the Road traffic and Schifffahrtsamt Bern.

Maybe you can schedule the test drive right there and then, or only after they approved all the papers.

Problem: How can you prepare for the test drive when you are not allowed to drive? 1) Road traffic and Schifffahrtsamt Bern may grant you an extension. 2) You are screwed. Your Indian license may be valid in France, but it is not in Germany as it is not valid in Switzerland.

Re: 6 years in CH, Indian driving licence

You will for sure need some classes from a driving instructor who will explain the driving rules for Switzerland. the driving instructor will know how and where you can give the driving test. so search for a driving instructor online and book some lessons. also give a read to the driving rules book for Switzerland. i cant remember the name but its a red book which you can get in many bookstores.

just for info, the local strasseverkehrsamt (transport office) is responsible for conducting driving tests and giving a license. so in the end, your instructor will book you for a driving test with strasseverkehrsamt.

but remember, you will have only one chance to clear the driving test, because it is a conversion case (from indian license to swiss license). if you fail, you have to start from the beginning like doing the theory exam and the driving test again. basically if you have fail, you have to go the route of applying for a fresh swiss license.

cheers

Re: 6 years in CH, Indian driving licence

+2 to HappyCreature

I'm not sure about the direct consequences if you failed the shortened driving test. But sooner or later you'll be relegated to getting your license the ordinary way (theory test, emergency aid course, driving under instructor supervision, and whatever else may be necessary these days), which will cost multiple thousand CHF (my impression is, 3000-5000 CHF is a reasonable range these days), and that doesn't even include the time it takes to get you there. So you probably want to invest more what's absolutely necessary in driving lessons.

Personally, I'd also do as if I took a theory test, online courses and tests abound (make sure they use the official questions, e.g. www.theorie24.ch). If that lets you avoid even one accident, it will pay for itself manyfold. And it will help avoid driving mistakes, not just while practicing.

Additionally, you may want to ask the Strassenverkehrsamt if you can legally drive private cars somehow, for instance under supervision of a friend with an ordinary drivers license (that's how "ordinary" learners get most of their practice).
