Permis de circulation - Original or copy?

Hi All,

I was wondering if one should have the original car registration document (the Fahzeugausweis/Permis de circulation) in the car at all times OR if a copy is sufficient?

I have been driving around with a copy since I got the car a few years back and all of a sudden got a little uncertain which is right and which is wrong...

Thanks...

I leave it at home and have a photocopy in my wallet. I leave nothing in the car... I know many Swiss do, but if your car was stolen would you want the thief to have the Docs ?

You're supposed to carry the original with you in the car at all times but I always just have a copy and keep the original in a safe place at home. I've only been stopped and had the documents checked once and they never said anything but they can fine you for not having the original ( although it's not very much).

You need the original, remember it's quite normal to cross borders in CH, you need to carry all you documents & can be fined if you don't.

True, though it's only 20CHF if memory serves.

Now, if the car plus original Fahrzeugausweis get stolen, the car can be registered on another name, no questions asked, probably the buyer won't even think of asking if it's legit, as the car is registered on the thief. That makes getting it back quite difficult and costly.

That's easily avoided by having only a copy in the car, or none at all (carry the Fahrzeugausweis in your wallet instead, though that may be tricky for couples).

Re: Permis de circulation - Original or copy?

If you have photo copies or left them at home, the fines are only Fr 20 for the car paper and Fr 20 for the driving license.

BUT, you then have to be able to identify yourself, and then enable the police may call their office and establish the facts.

With no identity at all, you might be marched to the police station and someone will have to bring you the original documents.

I never carry the original car papers, only the copy. But you should carry the originals on your person when driving.
