Airbag in car faulty

The car airbag fault indicator light is on and the Hyundai garage proposed replacing the whole drivers side airbag assembly for CHF2,000. I spoke to an English company who said the airbag doesn't need replacing as it's never been deployed. Anybody have any recommendations or experience. It sounds like a lot of money to me.

Re: Airbag in car faulty

Did they read the fault code or just say straight away the bag needs replacing? I guess they read the code?

Not sure, he said there was a problem with the power.

Re: Airbag in car faulty

Generally speaking, a power problem could be caused by something as simple as an unplugged cable or a corroded plug, which certainly would cost far less. But of course the problem could well be much more central.

I think any garage can read out the error code and interpret its meaning so perhaps consult a different garage for a 2nd opinion.

Re: Airbag in car faulty

Also check if it isn't covered under some sort of recall - Hyundai are one of the makers using Takata airbags.

Getting it replaced under a recall should be free.

Re: Airbag in car faulty

Don't take the chance. 34 million cars have been recalled due to a fault with Takata airbags. We had the warning light on our 2011 Qashqai come on a few weeks ago and had to have a part replaced so I wouldn't like to say the fault is only with the makes currently on the recall list - all the listed Nissans are much earlier makes than ours. 2,000 is cheap if it's going to save your life.
