Empty Planes

What is the least number of passengers anyone has flown on a commercial flight with?
Flew in from London City yesterday and I counted on 16 people on it.

Drink, sandwich & chocolate football were all served in record time and then the crew spent some time chatting with us.
Most enjoyable

Re: Empty Planes

How big was the plane?

I once flew from Baltimore to DC. It's a 15 minute flight.
There were 4 of us on board. But the plane only held 10 or 15 (can remember).

I think it was an "Avro"

When I went to pick up my bags there were only 3 on the carousel and 2 were mine

Re: Empty Planes

My X is a flight attendant, about 15 years ago she was with Crossair and flew many times with ZERO passengers onboard. Many times it was the last flight of the day returning to Zurich from Luxembourg in a Saab 340 (33 passengers). Once I made the same trip but first flight of the day from Lux to ZH up front with the pilots it was beautiful flying into Kloten as the sun was just coming up.

Re: Empty Planes

On a flight from Sydney to Seoul, there were so few people on board that they decided to upgrade my seat to business class.

Which was nice...

Re: Empty Planes

I once flew the ever-popular transatlantic route between Keflavik Iceland and Halifax Nova Scotia (Canada) on December 30th. Plane capacity: well over one hundred passengers (possibly closer to 200). Actual number of passengers: if I recall correctly, five including myself.

One cool thing about doing this route was that we had a beautiful orange sunset for about five hours.

Re: Empty Planes

I was on the Cityjet flight from London to Zurich last Wednesday, and I was also suprised to see that there were only 8 other people on the shuttle bus.

We didn't get chocolate footballs though - I guess I flew with the wrong airline .

Around 5 maybe? On a MD80 to Copenhagen. Happened quite a few times "in the old days".

Re: Empty Planes

If airlines do not run their published schedule they risk losing their grand-daddy rights. Which for an airline would be a bad thing.

I counted around 10 on a 747 from Tokyo to Hong Kong at the height of the SARS outbreak. There were more crew than passengers. Everybody but me was wearing a surgical mask.

Re: Empty Planes

In '94 I flew back from Thailand via Dhaka. From Dhaka to Rome, my brother and I must have been the only people on the plane. It was quite bizarre. I remember flying over Switzerland, in December and seeing the Alps, all fluffy-like.

This was Bangladeshi airways, which might explain it. The worst airline I have ever flown.

Re: Empty Planes

If you want to fly a nearly empty flight then fly international on New Year's Eve. I returned once from San Francisco on a 747, the plane was so empty (in economy) that each passenger had their own row of seats to sleep on..!
It was also the quietest New Years I ever experienced..

Biman Bangladesh, the only airline that has to hire passengers as well as crew.

A few years ago, this was not the case. I was on holiday in Japan for during New Years 1999/2000. There I met a couple of fellas from Texas who scored dirt cheap flights from the US to Japan (around $300, i think). The reason why they were so cheap was that the plane was in the air on the stroke of midnight when the Millenium Bug was expected to wreak havoc.
