... trunk isn't that big IMO...
Well, that does depend what you are comparing it to, doesn't it!

Compared to an E class, positively minute, compared to mini, huge.

Yet, for most people not earning the minimum 120k CHF (or is it 150k these days?), with 2 children, they manage to get by with estate cars in the range of 3 series, A4, Passat, Octavia etc. and, indeed, some much smaller.

We had a 3 series touring and it was cramped, but we rarely needed to pack the boot/trunk above the seat-line.

A friend of ours has an older Passat saloon, and the boot in that is enormous - certainly enough for his family of 4 + dog.

The challenge comes usually when you have 3 children and want full car seats. Then you need a bigger car which accommodates 3 child seats side-by-side or has an extra row of seats.

I would not do that.
I would buy a second hand car.
New cars depreciate like crazy. As soon as you drive it out of the showroom, you will lose 15-20% of the value.
You have many good pre-owned cars in CH. Have a look at them.
You could get a nicely maintained SUV for the same price.

Not always true. My 2.5yr old Ford is worth more now than I paid for it.

Source : Checking the dealers website and Immoscout24.ch shows a few identical cars with same mileage, same spec, but with an asking price about 10-15% higher than I paid.

Maybe - but without the sun-roof.
There's just too much that could go wrong with it.

As for a family car - I'm not sure that Passats, Ocatvias (and Superbs) and all the other "Kombi"-cars actually qualify.
We had one (or several, actually, over the years) when I was a kid and once you had loaded-up two (or three) kids and a bit of luggage for each, there wasn't that much space left. Or rather none.

It's certainly roomy if you can fold the rear-seats and use that space, too.

So, these days I'd rather look into Sharans/Alhambra or maybe the new Touran.
Not really bigger than a SUV, but actually much more utility-value.

And certainly in the OPs budget (unless he wants 4x4 and a towbar).
Absolutely agree with you on this. "Family Car" and "kombis/estates" are something of a misnomer IMHO.

A family car to me is something like Focus, BMW 3-series, Merc C class, Peug 408 etc. (Fiesta, Corsa, 1 series etc to me are small family cars, ie for dropping little cherubs off at school and doing the shopping)

Once you have "family in them ie, 2 parents, 1 infant in car seat, the car is pretty full. Even with a kombi, you'll struggle to get 3 holiday size bags and a pram/stroller, as I've recently discovered with my Focus combi.

The problem is less to do with the small size of the car and more to do with how much volume kids/babies stuff takes up. Most car seats are huge now, prams are just ridiculously massive, so by the time you've put those 2 items in, there's little room left for bags/cases.

If you have a strict budget like that and your criteria is a family car, then I too would go for a used (18mth/2yr old) Touran or equivalent.

Depends what how much luggage you consider... I once went camping for a week with 4 friends... Everything held inside a kombi... (i can admit it was tight), summer vacation so not much room needed for clothes, but A LOT for camping (tends, matress etc...)

If you only consider a car for vacation go with it... but I suppose you don't take vacation the whole year so the gas milage with be a disadvantage... I would rather prefer a good spacious "Kombi" and with a "roof luggage" apart when needed IMO

You need to re-assess your packing needs & car definitions

We managed comfortably with a 3 series touring (estate) with two children (aged 18 months apart, so plenty of kit needed).

I agree that a Ford Focus is small, but if you look at reviews it often comes under the "hot hatch" sizing rather than family range estates that I mentioned above which have plenty enough space...

All those saying otherwise have bought hook, line & s(t)inker into the whole "need/can't possibly survive without an SUV/MPV/big car" marketing crap from car manufacturers.

I agree that a half-way "decently" spec'ed Sharan is out of reach for most families, actually. Which makes calling it a "family-car" nevertheless quite frivolous, somehow.

But I found that once you add "towbar" to the requirements, VW Passats and Skoda Superbs (AFAIK, the Superb is the Passat-equivalent, the Ocatvia is the equivalent to the Golf Plus) start getting so expensive that you can get Seat Alhambras for not much more.

I will have to do the full math on this before I actually buy one (or the other) - insurance, tax, fuel, assumed maintenance-costs (tires, mostly).
Also, I doubt that the fuel-consumption between a Passat and an Alhambra is that much far apart.

Look at the mazda 6. Similar size to A6 but much more value for money. Falls under 35k for sure even if under 20000Km.
