MFK mandatory to buy a 3yr old 2nd hand car?

I have agreed to buy a second hand car from a private seller. It's a 3 year old vw with 33k km on the clock and was last serviced at 22k km. Should I insist on the current owner taking it through an MFK? Im not clear whether a car of this age needs an MFK within the last 12 months to get insurance etc...
Thanks.

it needs to be done first time when the car is 4 years old.

If you have agreed to buy the car without MFK, that is what the deal is, you can insist on the current owner doing an MFK, but legally he has no obligation............"Caveat Emptor"

Re: MFK mandatory to buy a 3yr old 2nd hand car?

I'd push for the seller to put a fresh MFK on it - which they can request quite easily.

If they refuse I'd walk away.

As for the service - I am guessing it was a variable service - but double check when the next one is due (the onboard computer should tell you).

Remember: a 3yr old VW should look and feel like a new car.

Actually this part is not true. You can volunteer for an earlier test. How else do you think dealers are able to sell all their cars as with MFK?

ps. ******* quote button not working again

People volunteer for it for a lot of reasons:
1) They want it in summer because their winter wheels are questionable - or vice versa
2) They want it before they put a new "questionable" exhaust on
3) The car has just been serviced and is known to be in perfect condition and they will sell/exchange it "soon"
4) They are embarking on an epic road trip (>5,000km)

You're absolutely correct. According to AutoRicardo.ch, a vehicle owner can register for an MFK test outside of the normal interval periods as he wishes.

"Davon abgesehen kann der Fahrzeughalter sein Auto oder Motorrad jederzeit auf eigenen Wunsch und ausserhalb der normalen Fristen zur Prüfung anmelden."

Re: MFK mandatory to buy a 3yr old 2nd hand car?

One of my bikes is getting it's first ever MFK.

I bought it new 10+ years ago!

Another one had it's first ever MFK last year, 14 years after it was first put on the road, and 11 years after I bought it.

Re: MFK mandatory to buy a 3yr old 2nd hand car?

Just a note for the record.

If you voluntarily submit the vehicle to an earlier MFK test, and it fails the MFK test, the problem(s) must still be fixed within 2 weeks, as if you had not volunteered.

You cannot drive around for another year or so until the test is mandatory.
