Bringing car from UK On B permit

Hi there chaps,
I am thinking to buy a car in the UK, LHD and drive it down to Switzerland.
Some (maybe wise or maybe not) man told me that when i put in the application for my B permit (which is next week) i will be able to drive the car into swiss no problems and then will merely have to change the license plates, insurance etc to swiss in 6 months.

The key part being that (so the wise man said) that i only have 6 months to use this option otherwise after 6 months of having my B permit i would have to import the car and go through the hassle at the border to do this.

Question is....Is the WISE MAN really wise???

Thanks everyone.

You will have to pay import duty, although you have 1 year to start the process.
You have to have owned the car for 6 months BEFORE you enter CH if you want the tax free option.

Re: Bringing car from UK On B permit

Aside from paying the import duty, plus the VAT, there would likely be more problems.

These LHD cars for sale in the UK appear to be cheap, and most of them were first registered in Spain and France. There are often small details in the differences, electrically and mechanically, between a Spanish and a Swiss model. When you come to import the car it has to be built to the Swiss standard, and there just might be some items that have to be exchanged immediately.

Generally you need to buy a Certificate of Compliance, CoC from a Swiss garage, & you might be shocked at the price! If you have a copy of the car registration documents, model number & serial numbers, a Swiss garage can probably give you a quote, and will charge you for it!

If you own the car for 6 months before moving here, most of the above does not apply.
The CoC. Is issued by the manufacture, does not need to be sourced from CH.

Thanks thought that seemed somewhat heavy, of course will need to pass the Swiss MOT at some point.

How would i 'PROVE' i had owned the car for six months prior to moving??

The registration papers will have a date........ 1 day less than 6 months & you pay the duty.

when moving to switzerland you have 2 years to bring your vehicles tax free if the vehicle was owner by you longer than 6 months. Furthermore you can use your vehicle in switzerland with your foreign plates for one year from the date of your B permit (not the date that the vehicle enters swizerland but the date when you were issued your swiss residency)

so: you have 2 years from the date of your b permit to bring your property and cars tax free, and one year from the date of your permit to use your foreign plates.

To register your car with swiss plates you must go to the traffic department of your kanton with the vehicle papers and the customs form and they will schedule your for an inspection of the vehicle where the specialist mechanic will ensure that the vehicle is safe for the road. After the inspection you can register and receive swiss plates on the spot, provided that you have swiss insurance.

also, you can purchase a one day or four day swiss plate which includes insurance. The one day plate cost is 60chf and the four day plate is about 100chf. All you need is the vehicle title with the vehicle information.

It has always surprised me, more people do not think about it, especially when they know they will be coming to Switzerland more than 6 months in advance.

Here is a useful thread on how to import UK car to Switzerland

How to import your car from the UK

Something else to compare the price difference on cars between Switzerland & UK, i.e. some brands would be considerable more expensive in Switzerland to UK

I believe you are allowed to keep a car on UK number plates for up to a year, providing you have valid MOT, Road Tax and insurance. However international insurance for the year you would probably find very high. Possible better to import, but then you will need international insurance for the time you are traveling. Think most UK Insurance include a month, some maybe 2 or 3 months, that is not as high at the International Insurance for 1 year.

Something else to think about, if you will need 4 wheel drive?

Not relevant to the import, but so you know, most people in Switzerland, have a set Summer & set of Winter wheels for their car.

Good luck in your search
