What's the right way to hand over money for a car?

So I'm about to buy a secondhand car from a private individual. I've gathered that it's better for us to sign a sales contract - what then? Should I hand over cash, or should I initiate a bank transfer. If a bank transfer, should the car change hands when I initiate the transfer or when the money arrives? What could go wrong? Any other precautions I could take?

Thanks
Sim

Cash is always good. I handed over 18k in cash to a dealer when I picked up our car.

autoscout24.ch has a page with a sample sales contract and other advice. You can agree in the sales contract on the form of payment:

http://www.autoscout24.ch/Cms/Articl...21&cmsaid=4192

See p. 16 regarding payment (which is typically cash for a used car):

If you do hand over cash, make SURE you get a receipt. With bank transfers you have automatic proof, but if you forget the receipt for a cash payment...ouch.

Bought many times with no contract & no receipt, same with selling. No one will ever give you the car unless they have been paid.

Pay in cash but always take a massive gun with you which can help in the event of a misunderstanding over the nature or amount of payment.

Re: What's the right way to hand over money for a car?

Car4You.ch has a car sales contract that includes a separate payment receipt section requiring a signature by the seller. See 5. Quittung:

https://ratgeber.car4you.ch/tl_files...vertrag_de.pdf

So, the seller and buyer can sign the sales contract at 4. Rechtgültige Unterschriften. Then, when the payment is made by the buyer to the seller, the seller would sign section 5. Quittung acknowledging receipt of payment.

I like this aspect of this contract.

Seems very complicated, keys + car + Grey card is all you need It's not as if a stranger would give you the keys if you had not paid, is it?

I have sold to dealers & private people, never any paperwork.
