Best time to buy a car for a good deal

As the title says. I was wondering when the best time is to buy a car (new or used) from a dealer in Switzerlanad. I normally try to buy privately but the next car I'm looking at doesn't seem to have many available on the market. Do the same rules for the time to buy apply as elsewhere (around Christmas, end of each quarter, just before a new model realease etc.)?

Also would be interested to hear if anyone has managed to get big discounts off the marked price by either negotiation or buying at a certain time. Merci!

Possibly, now is a good time to find cheap diesel-engined cars.

If only I was after a VW. Doubt this will have much of an effect on the rest of the Diesel market.

Re: Best time to buy a car for a good deal

A good time is often around model updates as they look to get rid of older stock. Or 3 months after a new model comes out as the Demo cars are then available cheap

Re: Best time to buy a car for a good deal

Honestly: it really depends on the specifics - manufacturer, type,...

About now is for example the best time for a deal on convertibles, spring is the most expensive...

Apart from the models directly affected, it is very likely that others will get caught up by association. There are some suggestions that this may eventually lead to the end of Diesel cars all together

Only the Euro 5 models with 2 liters or less... I was wondering if this is the right moment to buy one of those good old 5.0 V10 TDIs...

You really believe that !

They are all in it up to their eyeballs, some more than others i agree, but the emissions are all bad on diesel cars (Did i read Vauxhall/Opel (GM) at 11x over ??)

Re: Best time to buy a car for a good deal

The answer is "it depends".

The peak new car buying time is around "bonus" time (for the banks) - when bankers are awash with cash. That doesn't mean the cars are delivered then though - depends on what they buy!!

In general though dealers are tighter around Mar-Jun than they are between Nov-Jan. They tend to push hard in March (it is spring buy a new car with your bonus) and September/early October (winter is coming buy a new car in case your 4 year old one stops working). High performance cars often get an end of year discount early November - with dealers cutting their losses not expecting it to shift until April.

But these type of buyers tend to avoid 2 litre VW Golfs and the suchlike.....

Also look at importation. I friend of mine did this recently with a not very common car and saved a bundle for a minor about of extra hassle.

So I looked into this and was in Germany earlier this week to test drive a car. I liked it and was prepared to buy the thing but I'd seen there was also another dealer a little further north offering the same spec car for over 2 grand less.

Went in to agree a price:

Me - "So who was the previous owner?"
Salesman - "Herz rentals, Köln"
Deep intake of breath, me, with raised eyebrow - "does it come with winter tyres?"
Salesman - "Of course not"
Me - "Okaaaaay, well I'm thinking of buying your car, what sort of discount are you able to offer me today?"
Salesman - "None, it's a well specced car, look the heated seating costs xxx much new"
Me - "The car's not new, and the same one is cheaper not 50km away from here"
Salesman - "No discount"

So, either he was a stubborn a-hole or I really chose the wrong time to buy. Either way, it's a buyers market and I'm in no hurry. I'm suprised the guy didn't seem to awknowlege this, perhaps he just assumed that as I'm from Switzerland that I'm happy to throw money at him. Off to view the other one now, perhaps I'll wait until the end of the month though!

As I mentioned in another thread - the FF is now under 180k - ideal winter car.

You know you want to
