Give up your license?

Hi EFers

20min says that if you hand in your driver's license, SBB is working together with the cantonal road traffic authorities and will give you 33 CHF reduction on your Halbtax and some other reductions if you have a GA, or in a canton they deduct CHF 5 from your monthly pass.
And it looks like there are no goodies for those who don't own a license in the first place and therefore never use cars....

The hilarious thing is that this reduction scheme isn't possible in all cantons and - really, CHF 33? The parking fees in a large city for about ONE day...?

Anyway, the comments were fun to read

for road safety, it might be good if most EF members hand it in (not me of course )

Re: Give up your license?

Having a paper B permit, and coming from a country with no national ID card I would not give up my license, I've driven thrice in CH in the last four years and used my license for ID probably 10 times that here, and around 20 times that in the US.
CHF33 a year is less than 10rapen a day! Wow!
Hang on, how does this tie in with their Mobility partnership? Surely that will not go down well! Especially as it's WAY less than the mobility fee with SBB (190)

Re: Give up your license?

I would say give me a first class GA and I might give it up. Including nighttime supplement.

Otherwise forget it.

I've driven plenty in the UK, on the right side of the road, as opposed to here, on the wrong side. And when I drove here I never actually accidentally drove into another country so....
Yeah, I'll let you know....

Have you heard about passports? I am really amused that they let you use driving license at the border, they're always asking me about passport/id even if I pass them the license first...

I use passports at the border, but do not like to carry a passport around with me, especially in downtown SF, so when I an IDed for other reasons (buying beer, picking up mail, proving I am my daughters parent etc) I use the only credit card sized piece of ID I have. Have you never been IDed anywhere else than the border?

Oh, very rarely, but I get your point. Somehow I thought that you're talking about passing the border. I have my national id and passport and driving license, so the choice is a bit wider for me

Re: Give up your license?

Border control can choose to accept driving licence or other photo id, or not. Should they feel suspicious (and they don't have to give explanation) they can insist on Passport or Identity card + of course driving licence and insurance, etc - and escort you home if you haven't got the relevant docs with you.
