Insuring US registered car - Clements cancelling policies

So I am in a bit of a bind.

Last year I moved out to Switzerland on an L permit and I brought my car. Because of my permit status my car import was nixed at the border and instead I was given a form that simply lets me drive the car in Switzerland for 2 years. This is not a game breaker because that was how long I was supposed to be here anyway for work. I called a number of Swiss insurance companies and they all said no way, we cant insure your car. It is registered in the US with no intention of being imported to Switzerland, I am just going to send it back with me when I am done. Luckily I found Clements who insured me over the past year(it cost a fortune too). A couple days ago they sent me a letter saying that my policy wont be renewed because they are done providing insurance in Switzerland. I was wondering if anybody knows of any similar service providers that can provide me overseas insurance. Geico has some offerings but when I asked last year they also said no to covering a car in Switzerland.

Non-Swiss Registered Car Insurance

This might help and also see saint7uk in particular as he is in the industry.

You can get a a Grenzversicherung (Available from Customs) it costs CHF 1200 for six months (liability only).

In Germany ADAC offers the Grenzversicherung rumors are it costs approx EUR 100 per month. Next ADAC offices are in Lörrach, Singen and Konstanz.

Or you get Z-plates. For this you will need a Form 15.30 (I think that is the one you already have) or Form 15.40, from customs. Then you can get an insurance from a Swiss insurance provider.

There is 100% loading with Z plates, I am assuming the car has to be Swissified first as well.

Hmm, I will look around at these guys. The lack of comprehensive is bad, its a fairly new car.

The Z plates looks like it could be an option. I think I just have to pay the customs office a visit in Martigny and ask them what I should do, I have a number of months till I lose insurance so I should be ok. Worst comes to worst I just send the car back early.

I took a look through here but most advice seems to say this used to be possible and no longer is. Thanks though, I will just try the customs office itself and see what they say about my quandry. I will post about my experience. Cheers.

Re: Insuring US registered car - Clements cancelling policies

Went to the customs office and they didn't understand why I got a 2 year long 15.30 when my car was brought over. They said the import should have been fine as is even with my permit status. Must have gotten a grumpy customs officer that day. Walked out with a stammnummer for my car and I can go get swiss plates for it. Crisis seemingly averted.
