Buying car plates

I know the government body in charge for the plate organize auctions and you can buy a desired plate, but can you sell one and transfer it among private hands? A guy I know is offering me a very funky plate number and he says I can register it under my name. Anybody has done this before? I don't want to go to the SAN and look like a donkey with a plate

As so often, it depends on the canton, e.g., according to this article, Ct. Bern allows its license plates to be bought and sold while Ct. Solothurn does not:

In Ct. Aargau, license plates numbered 1-10,000 can only be transferred within families. At 10,001 and above, they are freely transferable:

You should probably check if your canton has restrictions.
