Re: Taxi to Zurich Airport at 4.30am. Practical?

I don't want to encourage anybody to take the pi$$, but often times required to get anywhere and gate closure times are inflationarily over stated by airlines and you can generally mentally relax on those deadlines. The only genuinely uncontrollable unknown is the airside train, but if you're not leaving from a gate that needs that you can always make up for time by walking a bit faster. I think I've never actually seen a flight that was completely boarded at the time they said the gate was closing. Sonetimes they haven't even started yet at that point, or just barely done the priority boarding.

Thanks to all the input guys.

The flight is 06:55 but I REALLY cannot miss it as it means missing Christmas at home!

As mentioned, this flight takes me to my chosen airport, is CHF100 cheaper and allows me to get back to UK early (note: it is not a direct flight, it is via AMS).

I think public transport may be tight, and I'm unfamiliar with the system (will have only been in Zurich three weeks).

Will most likely go with an early taxi. Yes, it costs alot more than public transport, but on balance I'll likely be financially better off than taking the later flight with public transport. And I'll need to get home from the airport the other end.

In summary, it appears that I will be able to get a taxi at 4:30 to the airport for under CHF 100.

Of course you can do whatever you want, but you are simply depriving yourself of an hours sleep with this approach. Book the taxi for 0530 and you'll be at the airport an hour before check-in.

Re: Taxi to Zurich Airport at 4.30am. Practical?

On Saturday there is a train leaving HB at 04:11 and Hardbrücke at 04:13 arriving Kloten Balsberg at 04:22 which is maybe not as pracitical as the airport station but its a maximum 10 minute walk.

Try reading. It saves 100 CHF and it lands at the airport he/she wants. OK it isn't for you, but not everybody can afford to be as choosy as you.

If it offends you, then move on. There's plenty more internet out there.
Does it really save Chf 100.-- ? There is a taxi fare to take into account rather than a train fare for a later flight. A stopover in Amsterdam, so 2 flights to take at a very busy time of the year, when it is good time to strike, there can be fog/bad weather etc.

Personnaly and totaly irrespective of my situation, if i NEEDED to be somewhere for a particular time/date, i would take a direct flight, even if it cost a bit more and required a longer distance to travel from landing to final destination.

The guy wants to go 23rd December = busy time for taxis, somne chance he won't turn up, limnited admittedly, but still a chance.

You get to your final destination completel knackerd due to the earyl start, quite likely you have to spend money for coffee/water which we all know is not cheap air-side of an airport.

It certainly doesn't offend me in the least Mirfield, it's just with the combo of early start, taxi, 2 flights which results is a small saving is hardly worth it in my opinion, albeit he arrives at a closer airport, but as we don't know what this exactly means it is difficult to evaluate. LHR as opposed to Edinburgh, sure inconvenient, but LHR to say Luton.....hardly worth taking the risk, if you really need to be there on 23rd.

25chf - the sleeping cubicle costs 25chf.

Probably not worthwhile for someone who's actually fairly close to the airport, but if further away could be a good option.
During the day - at night (the option the OP would need if they weren't going by taxi) it's CHF 40.

I wonder if one can lock away their valuables/carry-on during the night/sleeping in the open rest area?

If you can point me towards a direct flight from Zurich to the north of England (within a 100 mile radius of Newcastle) I will buy you a Christmas hamper.

As far as I can see, an indirect flight is my only option. I can fly through CDG, LHR or AMS, but whichever way, I will need a layover.

There are lugagge lockers in the SBB part of the airport.

Or at least there were last time I needed them , which admittedly was some years ago.

Personally I'd go via train to Geneva - on 23rd December the chances of delays at AMS are high, as are the chances of your luggage not making it if you have any.

GVA-NCL is a direct route with Easyjet.

The transit hotel's webpage say that they offer space for valuables. I missed it.

Thanks for your info

CDG? no way!

AMS? risky. they are crap at the best of times, but fog risk, snow risk, xmas travel. i wouldn't.

LHR might be a good bet. worst case you can get a train or drive up.

Maybe go to EDI or MAN, but it's a 2-3 hour train from there to Newcastle.

LHR is terrible for fog. I slept at the bus station there once just before Christmas as all the flights were cancelled due to the fig and the hotels were booked too.
Just look at what happened this weekend with the fog.

And get a train? Last time I flew back to the U.K, when I went to get a train I was told there were none running that day.
I got a coach instead once and it broke down twice on the way to the airport.

The moral of all this; if you're not travelling to Basel, it's just not worth the effort.

ZHR-MAN is a pretty good route, but yeah, a bit of a trek still from there, but at least you avoid the LON/AMS craziness.

Re: Taxi to Zurich Airport at 4.30am. Practical?

I get the ZHR/MCR flight each week.

The very first week, I had to get the early one and had the same dilemma as you. I booked a taxi, which cost 75chf. I arrived at the airport 2 hours before the flight. THE AIRPORT WASN'T EVEN OPEN YET!!!

When it did open (5am), I went to the Swiss business lounge. THAT WASN'T OPEN EITHER!!! It only opened 5.45am - 20 mins before I had to board.

When I did the maths, I would have been better off paying more and doing a later two leg flight via AMS that the direct one I got. Factor in the lack of sleep and hassle... Am never doing that ever again.

Regards

Ian

Re: Taxi to Zurich Airport at 4.30am. Practical?

Well, upon further research, I eat my words and owe somebody a Christmas hamper!

I will take the later flight from Zurich to Manchester with Swiss. Not an ideal arrival point as its 2.5 hours from where I need to be, but its a two hour direct flight, half the price and cuts out the early start and also the Christmas rush layover.

Thanks to all that chipped in to the discussion.

So Mirfield, you going to share this Christmas hamper.....?

In view you got 2.5hrs from Manchester to wherever, why not train down to Geneva and get the Newcastle flight at 10.10hrs ?
