Maybe go to EDI or MAN, but it's a 2-3 hour train from there to Newcastle.
Surely Edinburgh to Newcastle by train is less that 2-3 hours?

Planes tend to land at the airport though.

I guess those are train connections involving an additional change of trains at Haymarket.

The airport bus is way faster in my opinion and drops you off directly outside Waverley station.

An hour and a half extra travelling time just because you're starting at the airport seems ridiculous to me.

The airport bus runs every 10 minutes and takes about 20, maybe 30 if traffic gets bad,

Thanks to all the input guys.

The flight is 06:55 but I REALLY cannot miss it as it means missing Christmas at home!

As mentioned, this flight takes me to my chosen airport, is CHF100 cheaper and allows me to get back to UK early (note: it is not a direct flight, it is via AMS).

I think public transport may be tight, and I'm unfamiliar with the system (will have only been in Zurich three weeks).

Will most likely go with an early taxi. Yes, it costs alot more than public transport, but on balance I'll likely be financially better off than taking the later flight with public transport. And I'll need to get home from the airport the other end.

In summary, it appears that I will be able to get a taxi at 4:30 to the airport for under CHF 100.
If you already have a travel pass by then, you could do a 5am recky and see if public transport works for you. Id have more faith in the train system than maybe a taxi not turning up which will also cause nervousness. swiss trains arent like uk trains, they dont usually run late or stop altogether even with very bad weather conditions.
I sometimes travel with no luggage too.

Scheduled time is 25 minutes. So if we take that and assume timing is perfect and there is no wait, and you are a world class sprinter and can make it from the bus-stop to the train in 1 minute and catch the quickest of your trains, it'll take 1 hour 53 minutes. Was my estimate of 2 hours in the real world really that outrageous? ()

The 3 hours was referring to MAN.

During the day - at night (the option the OP would need if they weren't going by taxi) it's CHF 40.

I wonder if one can lock away their valuables/carry-on during the night/sleeping in the open rest area?
Yes, it's mentioned in the PDF with the prices. I got the impression it might be somewhat small, think it said "for yoru valuables" which may not include ordinary luggage.

Saw that, guess it's best to call in advance and ask what size luggage fits in said storage.

In theory, particularly in winter

I'd put a lot more faith in the 2:50 Zurich - Geneva airport train - especially as others have said, it actually goes to the airport itself.

I get the ZHR/MCR flight each week.

The very first week, I had to get the early one and had the same dilemma as you. I booked a taxi, which cost 75chf. I arrived at the airport 2 hours before the flight. THE AIRPORT WASN'T EVEN OPEN YET!!!

When it did open (5am), I went to the Swiss business lounge. THAT WASN'T OPEN EITHER!!! It only opened 5.45am - 20 mins before I had to board.

When I did the maths, I would have been better off paying more and doing a later two leg flight via AMS that the direct one I got. Factor in the lack of sleep and hassle... Am never doing that ever again.

Regards

Ian
WHY?!

Time it so that you arrive at the business lounge when it opens, then you can grab a quick breakfast and then head to the gate. No need for a taxi.

Well, upon further research, I eat my words and owe somebody a Christmas hamper!

I will take the later flight from Zurich to Manchester with Swiss. Not an ideal arrival point as its 2.5 hours from where I need to be, but its a two hour direct flight, half the price and cuts out the early start and also the Christmas rush layover.

Thanks to all that chipped in to the discussion.
well manchester is more than 100 miles for newcastle. just sayin'...

Why? Because I was a newbie numb nutz... Like the op I knew no better.

Now I am so experienced I can time arrival to the minute, including just enough time to drink two beers (and have a pee!) before boarding...

Regards

Ian

Indeed. There appears to be a sudden outbreak of insensate testicles amongst our travelling companions. I'd check with a doctor.
