L to B permit - now need to import car, can I?

Hello all,

I currently live in Geneva and I've been here on an L permit since 1 June 2014. The permit was initially for 12 months and then extended for a further 6 as I'm on an 18 month international secondment.

Recently I've decided to take a local contract so will, I presume, be moving to a B permit from 1 December.

I have a car in the UK which I have not imported and I have not swapped my UK driving licence for a Swiss licence as initially I had no intention of staying here, plus my wife lives in the UK and uses the car on a daily basis.

My wife will now be joining me in Geneva from 1 December.

My question is, does the 1yr timescale for importing a car/swapping driving licence apply from 1 June last year when I first arrived, or from 1 December this year when I move to a resident permit?

Many thanks,

I believe it is from the first day you announce your residence. so would be the time you got your L permit. a quick call to the customs office would give you a def answer!

I would suggest that, if your wife is moving down for the first time, that should be a perfect time to import. Even if the authorities rule that you've been here too long to import, she hasn't, and presumably the car is half hers.

Call them up and ask. Swiss authorities (at least on the eastern side of the Röstigraben) are generally pretty helpful and fair.

Re: L to B permit - now need to import car, can I?

Thanks guys - yes, the car is half hers. I'm exploring if she can import the car. That would certainly be the best option but the registration doc (V5) is in my name so I hope that doesn't complicate things! The V5 isn't proof of ownership though.

As for my driving licence, I guess I've missed the window to convert to a Swiss licence... or is that another thing them may be more liberal about on the French side?
