Men are for most part Trichromatic, whereas females have the potential for tetrachromacy, meaning men can see three colors and females can (theoretically) see four.
That's not quite right and actually doesn't really make sense -- I can see lots of colours, certainly more than four. Trichromats have three types of cone receptors in their eyes; tetrachromats have four. As there are two cone genes on the X chromosome, some people believe that only female humans (or at least people with XX chromosomes!) can be tetrachromatic. Others believe that certain combinations of conditions can yield tetrachromat-like vision in men or women.

Well that was interesting.
I scored a big fat zero which apparently means that I have perfect colour vision.

Can't wait to see what hubby scores.

A four is actually the score for a person with normal (untrained) vision, so conga rats.

And now I have my answer. He scored 174.

I was watching him take the test and just couldn't believe that he couldn't see the glaringly obvious mistakes he's made. He did best on the top one and appallingly badly on the bottom one.

Fun, and on my laptop screen, despite my eyes starting to go blurry, I managed a 4

I blame the screen - I'll do it on a proper monitor tomorrow and see if it's better.
And it was. Tried it on two different ones at work, got a zero on one and a seven on the other.

Likely your screen isn't calibrated,
The one that scored best is also the newest, an HP E231, and I've been able to calibrate it very well in the past, the worst one is a much older HP/Compaq LA1951g, on which I've never been able to fully remove the blue/green. I have them next to each other on the desk, sometimes with the laptop open as well, so it's quite easy to see the difference when my desktop picture displays on all three at once.

Doesn't that mean that he is actually colour blind in at least one respect then?

No you can't, you can only see three colours Red, green and blue, all other colours are shades from the combination of these three, the visible spectrum is between 380 and 700 nm above that is infra red and below that is near ultra violets, as a male you can distinguish somewhere between 15 and 20 million shades, in the range between 380 and 700 nm, a rough analogue is your computer monitor, it too can only show three colours RGB however if you look at the settings you have the option for "millions" this comes from the eight bit architecture of generic computer systems, 8-bit gives you 255+1 possibilities to show colours ranging from off, (screen black) to white (all 256 active) the millions come from 8*8*8, or 256*256*256= 16.7 mio.
You can under certain circumstances see ultra violet however to do so you would have to have your lens removed, maybe not a good idea.
Female tetrachromacy seems to come from specialised cones that can clearly distinguish tones in the third and fourth colour wheel, that is why your wife will go nuclear when you try to mix a dark blue sock with a black one. You can't see it but she can.
So hat's of to superwoman, however goldfish can also see four colours, birds and butterflies are pentachromats, they see five colours. The king of colour and my secret god is the mantis shrimp, that little fellow is a dodecachromat he can see 16 colours.

He is, we already knew that but I was staggered at just how bad he is.

Fortunately he doesn't travel so much in business now but when he did I either had to make sure I only packed clothes that all matched or label everything. He would come up with some appalling colour combinations otherwise.

He was best man at a wedding once ( a long time ago when men just went in their own suits) and the groom said in his speech "I'd like to thank my best man for not wearing his green suit". He had told everyone that he would be wearing a green suit because he genuinely thought that's what colour it was. ( it was a dark beige/taupe sort of colour IIRC).

No biggie, one in five males is colorblind in the Red-green spectrum.

"Dodeca-" means 12. I was confused until I read up on your friend the mantis shrimp:

Quote:
Compared to the three types of color receptive cones that humans possess in their eyes, the eyes of a mantis shrimp carry 16 types of color receptive cones. This gives the crustacean the ability to recognize colors that are unimaginable by other species.

The midband region of its eye is made up of six rows of specialised ommatidia. Four rows carry up to 16 different photoreceptor pigments, 12 for colour sensitivity, others for colour filtering...

Some species have at least 16 different photoreceptor types, which are divided into four classes (their spectral sensitivity is further tuned by colour filters in the retinas), 12 of them for colour analysis in the different wavelengths (including six which are sensitive to ultraviolet light) and four of them for analysing polarised light.
He's still pretty cool with perception of "only" 12 "primary" colours"!

He's one of the much rarer ones. The only colour ( except black and white) that he can consistently distinguish is yellow. Everything else he mixes up completely.

When I first met him I couldn't understand why he always bought me yellow flowers and yellow clothes but I later realised it was because it was the only colour he could really see properly. Everything is just a different shade of the same to him.

This is a shame. My nephew is coming in from Germany on the 27th - just a few days too early to take advantage of the 2016 sticker.

Still the same price..... but surly equally important than is 'When will the motorway sticker become transferable between cars registered to the same license plates'?
