info about foreign car

From February 2016 onwards i will reside in Zurich. I own a VW Golf 7 TDI (diesel) bought on March 2014 in Greece (with Greek plates) and i would like to bring the car to Switzerland.

Will i pay customs? I'm asking this because by the time I arrive, the car will be more than 1 year "old" (bought somewhere else). Or is it still considered an import, no matter when you bought it?

Regarding the plates, is it 1 year or 6 months with foreign plates?

And finally, I've lived already in Zurich for 3 years as student (2011-2014) and I have issued a Swiss driving license. I assume, that I will only need to switch again the licenses, not go through the procedure to issue a new Swiss driving license (with opt check etc.)... right?

Btw, i've already asked at Strassenverkehsamt, but they simply forwarded me to a list of official documents (in german) so...

You will pay import duties, because the right to import your possessions only lasts for a certain period after gaining residence.

Read the post again.

Feb 2016.
Car must be bought 6 months before residing back in CH ( you did deregister and got a new permit for 2016 right?)

Anyways, No you will not have to pay import duties BUT
You still have to pay the customs office when you declare it on your FIRST ENTRY. I think it was 100 chf (or 20) but cannot remember.

Then you have 1 year to change your plates BUT
The plates must be valid(taxes paid) in the originating country, Greece in you case.

You have 3 months to revert back to your CH License. If you got this before it is still valid. (In my case after 3 years away and a USA License)

After the 1 year you must get your car inspected and approved. SO ask for a COC from your dealer (in Greece) (here they cost 150chf)

If approved you will get CH plates !!!!

I have to get my USA truck inspected in January. Hopefully she will pass and finally get the plates

Do a search on the forum and many more explanations will show!!!

Re: info about foreign car

thanks* for your answers guys

@Anthony
yes, i cancelled my old permit and i'll issue a new one. By the time i arrive, it would be almost 2 years i own it.

Ragarding the license, i gave it back to the Kreisburo when i left (on 2014) so, i guess i will ask and see what happens .

i'll also get that COC from the VW dealer here, plus the proof that my plates are valid in Greece, and i think i'm good to go!

btw, i quote Brit1984's pm, as it is indeed helpful

You have to declare at the boarder/customs office you are wanting to impor t the car as part of your personal belongings. I think the cost in Zurich was 20chf
You need to have had the car registered to you for at least 6 months I believe.
You then have 12 months to get everything sorted for import such as the testing, registering the car etc. When you pay your 20chf they will give you a leaflet with what steps to take nexttheywill also post this out to you.

If it is a VW diesel with the emissions cheating software then I'm not sure it would be registered in CH before VW fixes the issue.

Re: info about foreign car

so far i wasn't notified about the issue

it's the 1.6 TDI model which -allegedly- does not have the software

if you ask me, i think they put it in every single model since 2011.
i'll see if i can check the emissions as soon as i pass emissions check

but so far, no notification, so i don't think someone can stop me without valid proof that the car is cheating

The 1.6 tdi has issues with both software and hardware.
