Yup.

How were you planning to prove that you are licensed to drive if stopped by one of the many police patrols here?

Get someone to send your driving licence over asap, and don't drive. Or get DVLA to send you a copy via internet or FAX, for a small fee. And whatever you do, don't cross the border into France.

Re: Do you need to be in possession of driving license while driving

to be honest i thought there was some European database. I never came over with the intention of driving and have never drove abroad before. In the UK im sure ur given 2 weeks to product license. so in swiss if a local forgets or loses their license you cant drive.

I know it sounds silly but i thought i could produce it later when needed.

Thanks David

Or anywhere over the border, it could cost you rather a lot.

If you have a swiss licence you can drive without having your licence with you.

All that happens if there is a control is a quick database check.. been there done that and no dramas.

If the cop is difficult they give you a 20chf fine.

If you have a UK licence then the discussion might get interesting

The OP doesn't have a Swiss driver's licence and can't prove that he has any driver's licence at all, and the car he's driving is not registered in his name. If he gets stopped and has a database check done on him (using what information?), he won't come out of it lightly.

The point of carrying these bits of paper is to enable the police to make a quick check and let you go. If you don't have your driving license or passport on you, the police might insist on you going to their station while they make enquiries.

Britain is very generous, I think it allows you 3 days (Not 2 weeks) to produce your license to the police station of your choice.

You might also consider carrying a statement from your sister that you are allowed to drive her car.

It's within seven days in the UK, I believe. I can't find a reference on the internet, though.
