Driving Advice - Zurich to Hook of Holland in December

Hello All, I'm looking for some advice about routes from Zurich to Hook of Holland. In my wisdom, I've booked an evening ferry from Hook of Holland on December 18 (last boarding 2115) but we can't leave Zurich until 9am. It seemed like a great idea in August when I booked it but since then loads of people predicting auto-armageddon on the roads the last Friday before christmas. Any advice on best route to take - German autobahn vs French Peage? The subsequent ferry crossing with a sea-sick prone husband and two children is a hurdle I haven't even started to consider!

Why are they predicting that? Most people will still be working that day (until 1600ish)

12hrs should be more than enough - as Google suggests: Zurich-Basel-Strasbourg-Luxembourg-Brussels-Rotterdam. 820km.

"Half" of Germany work flexitime, and finish work on Friday at 13:00, so maybe the warnings are genuine.

Having experienced the unbelievably heavy traffic around the middle of Germany, Köln, Dortmund etc, I would take the France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland route.

I do this trip regularly at Christmas, generally on the last Saturday before without any issue. The route I take is Strasbourg, Saarbrücken, Liege, Antwerp, Rotterdam.

This year I drive the day after you, on the 19th.

I would type Hoek van Holland instead of Hook van Holland in your GPS
