Public transport to Rotkreutz

From...anywhere!

I am moving to Rotkreutz for work and first the choice is where to live. This is heavily influenced by several factors:

1. Public transport only
2. Work is based in Rotkreutz
3. I will travel a lot so need to be able to get to Zurich airport easily

Lucerne seems 'popular' but is the opposite direction to Zurich airport, Zurich itself is too far for a daily commute to Rotkreutz.

Does anyone have any experiences of public transport along the Zurich to Lucerne (via Rotkreutz) route? It can be train, tram or combo. If the weather is nice I will even contemplate cycling once I know there are showers and changing available at work.

The above influence my choice of where to live more than the tax for one city over another.

Thx

Re: Public transport to Rotkreutz

I live north of Zurich and work in Luzern.
Yes, annoying. But there is a good train connection from Rotkreuz to the airport so anywhere in between would be good?
It all depends in the end on what you want to spend on rent and travel time.

Good luck

Re: Public transport to Rotkreutz

@roagner I don't envy you that commute.

I looked at http://www.thetrainline-europe.com/ and it says it's 1 hour approx Zurch to Rotkreutz, but I can't find a list of stops along the way other than Zug.

Maybe Zug is an option although it seems "quiet"...not wanting to offend anyone living there!

Is there a good bus network in the region? Only just started seasrchig and so I haven't found the goldmine of links yet that I'm sure that are out there.

Re: Public transport to Rotkreutz

The public transport network in the whole area is excellent. From Zug to Rotkreuz you have five trains per hour, from Luzern it's three per hour (four at peak times). The area between Zug and Rotkreuz is also very well covered by the local bus network: from any of the places in between, you will have at least two buses per bour linking to the trains.

There is one direct train per hour to the airport from Luzern, Rotkreuz, Zug and Baar.

From someone who was in your exact shoes not so long ago:

a) you can live in Rotkreuz so you are next to work and when you want to go to Zurich you hop in the Inter-region train to the airport, 40 minutes journey. Plus is you have no commute and Zug is only 20 minutes away by S1 train or IR. Rents are also very cheap in Rotkreuz. Minus is that Rotkreuz is very small and quiet, might get extremely bored, you have to take a train all the time to find civilisation either towards Zug or Luzern.

b) live in Baar, close to the station. You commute for 30 minutes but you are much closer to Zurich (60% of what it would take from RK). Plus is that Baar is beautiful and closer to Zug, even has all the amenities you need. Minus is that rents are a bit higher in Baar and is also a bit village-y like Rotkreuz but with a lot more landscape around you to go hiking etc

I guess you'll be working for Roche/Novartis?

Using the S1 train inside Zug is very reliable but lots of stops. Always can find a seat and is quiet.

Using IR trains to Zurich is usually with small delays of 1-5 minutes. Usually crowded and noisy but quite fast way for inter-cantonal trips.

Re: Public transport to Rotkreutz

I guess the best option for you would be Zug. You are in less than 10 mins with IR in Rotkreuz, you can easily reach the airport, and there is stuff to do in Zug. You are very fast in Zurich too. The rent is high though.
Good luck

Edit to my previous post: sorry, this is wrong. The direct train to Zürich Airport does not stop in Rotkreuz or Baar, you have to change at Zürich HB.

From Luzern and Zug, it's direct.

I need to work out how to 'Thank' on this forum :-)

Currently it looks like Baar may be a good option. Good from a location point of view and it sounds easy to get to both Rotkreutz and Zurich airport. Maybe I will take up hiking if there is nothing else to do!

Rotkreutz sounds a bit quiet for me, Zug is also a maybe, Lucerne isn't ruled out...Thanks to everyone, it seems the area is well served with public transport so it's personal choice.

I feel an expensive reconnaissance trip coming up in order of preference:
1. Baar
2. Zug
3. Lucerne

Actually I must include Cham now, but reading around if I want "life" it seems Zug or Lucerne are the only real options (sidetracking this thread)

Re: Public transport to Rotkreutz

Baar is pretty quiet as well and, in terms of getting to the airport, is only five minutes quicker than Zug which has a bit more to offer. Some parts of Baar are not particularly pleasant, especially the area south of the centre going towards Zug. In fact the whole area where Baar and Zug merge into each other is quite industrial and soulless.

I work in Rotkreuz and commute from Luzern (12 minutes on the train plus a ten-minute walk at each end). It does of course add 20 minutes to the airport trip compared to Zug/Baar, but it's a much livelier town.

No direct connections to Zurich from Cham, you have to take S1 to Zug firsty and take the IR from there.

Then I am worrying about nothing, I am now just going to focus on Luzern (getting the spelling right) and Zug.

Re: Public transport to Rotkreutz

My advice is to check all of them out first hand and decide later. I really liked Baar immediately. Zug is also nice but you can't find something decent close to the station, too expensive.

Luzern also nice but then you both commute to work for 25 minutes AND have a huge trip to the airport in almost an hour. On the plus side, rents in Luzern are very low but then you will lose all the nice tax rates Zug has to offer.

First world problems

Re: Public transport to Rotkreutz

I would also recommend luzern (lozärn is another spelling, just for confusion), i think it's an hour and ten direct to zurich airport, you're also in basel mulhouse in under two hours.

Zug and baar are pricier, if you're with a family, probably better. Luzern has a fantastic nightlife if you scratch the surface. It's also a beautiful town and the countryside is literaly minutes away, public transport throughout the area is excellent.

Don't use "thetrainline" to inform yourself about Swiss Public transport options. Use www.sbb.ch. This site will do door-to-door planning, so you can just enter street adresses. Good to see what the total commute (including walking) will be like when browsing apartment listings.
