Learning how to drive, possible to do in Zurich but living in Ticino?!

I am moving to Lugano in January and I don't have a driving license yet. In my new job I will have to drive from September onwards, so I need to learn how to drive. I don't speak Italian and hence I was thinking if I could do the things that are only available in Italian in Lugano in Zurich instead (In English or German) and then do the driving lessons in Lugano. Is that possible?

You mean do the lessons in Lugano (I guess you can find an English/German speaking instructor) but take the test in Zurich?

I have no idea, just trying to clarify what you mean.

I found a German and English speaking instructor in Lugano, the issue is first of all the First Aid course, the theory test I can do in German. There is also the sensibilizzazione, that is only available in Italian too.

Yes that's possible, should be just a formality.

You need to apply in the Kanton you're registered in (living officially), Tessin in your case. This page should get you going. However, since your driving instructor in Zürich has a vested interest in this formality I would have him him do the paperwork for me.

I would however take a note here that driving culture in Ticino is a different game to that of Zurich. I myself as not so seasoned driver looked at the traffic in Ticino for a while and went for extra lessons just to get a hang of it. Maybe you do your license in Zurich but then take few extra lessons in Ticino.

Lot of people cross the border from Italy every day and bring with them the italian flair on the roads, add the narrow streets and hills and anyone who is used to "orderly" Swiss driving will feel bit threatened at first. This applies to cities mostly...and of course if you are a good driver it might not feel like that but as I was definitely not used to it I felt a lot better taking lessons.
