Extra checks when selling an old car

Hi there, I read on another site (Angloinfo) that if a car that is more than 10 years old is sold it requires an additional control and the seller must agree to pay for any necessary repairs. Is anyone aware of how this works and how does it relate to the vehicle standard contract that has a "sold as is / no warranty" clause? Thanks for your advice.

It varies from Kanton to Kanton BUT in general, if a car is over 10 years old and the MFK is over 1 year old then the car will need a new MFK when it changes owner.

An ab platz car is sold "as is" - so unlikely to have a recent MFK and the garage isn't liable for repairs.

Unless you really know cars and/or have the tools and time to fix a car and pass it through an MFK you should avoid buying such cars. Typically they are sold from "pile em high, sell em cheap"-exporters OR mechanics who know there is no profit in it for them. Those last lot should be avoided like the plague - and the first lot should be approached with caution.

Re: Extra checks when selling an old car

Hi Dodgyken - thanks for your reply. I'm the one with the old car and I'm deciding whether to sell it or keep it when we move to the UK in a few weeks time. I was all set to put the car on English Forum but then read about this extra control which I don't have time to deal with because we are leaving soon. So are you saying that I can sell the car as is? It hasn't ever had an MFK (diplomat owner) but has only done 70,000km and is an Audi - too good to hand to a wrecker. Appreciate any advice. Thanks

Yes - you can sell it on here. You'll just have to price it accordingly.

Re: Extra checks when selling an old car

In canton ZH I transferred one of my cars to my gf and the MFK was almost two years old. No MFK requested or anything by the STVA.

Do I understand that diplomats dont have to do the security checks that the rest of us mere mortals have to do on our cars then ?
