Pick up car in Konstanz and drop off in Zurich?

Hi all
Wondering if it's possible to rent a car in Konstanz and drop off in Zurich? Anyone know any rental car companies that will do this? Thanks in advance!

I'd love to take the train both ways but I plan on buying some bulky items - not enough hands to bring back on the train!

Also is the tax back form stamp the same on the train? I've only driven to Konstanz.

Re: Pick up car in Konstanz and drop off in Zurich?

A quick search on AutoEurope shows at least Hertz will do it...for the regular base rate (average 160 Euros for a week for an economy car) plus a one-way fee of 350 Euros.

Train ticket sure sounds appealing when you look at one-way fees!

Edit - Just saw the reasoning. In that case, maybe a round-trip rental from ZRH is a better deal overall.

Are you in Zurich ? You may get some issues driving a german car in Switzerland with a Swiss licence, if you are resident in Zurich. Need more info to be able to help you.

Yep I'm in Zurich and resident in CH with a CH drivers license. thanks 3wishes for the search - was just looking for a one way car rental for about 4 hrs from Konstanz to Zurich. Too bad You can't do a one way Mobility rental from Konstanz!

In that case, another quick search shows Hertz still works at 60 Euros for the day plus the 350 Euro one-way fee.

On the other hand, if you want to rent one day and return the next in Konstanz (taking the train home after dropping off the car) then you'd only pay the 60 Euros for the day plus whatever the train costs.

Re: Pick up car in Konstanz and drop off in Zurich?

Sixt Autovermietung Konstanz

Car Service

Address: Maybachstraße 11, 78467 Konstanz, Germany

Phone:+49 180 6 666666

They are about 3km from the main border of the main highway behind McDonalds

You can ask Sixt if they have a Swiss car which needs to be taken back - bit of a long shot. You may have a problem if you get stopped at the border with a german rental car, you are not allowed to do it if you are resident in CH with a Swiss license.

Best to take a daily rental from Zurich or maybe someone is willing to car share who may be going to Konstanz for some Christmas shopping. What are you picking up and the approximate value.

If you are willing to pay a 350 chf one-way fee, you might also consider a taxi.

Re: Pick up car in Konstanz and drop off in Zurich?

Thanks all - looks like the one-way car is cost prohibited.

Does anyone know any Zurich car rentals which opens early and closes late on a Saturday? The Europcar near me only opens from 7.30 - 13.30. Ideally near Seefled. Thanks!

Re: Pick up car in Konstanz and drop off in Zurich?

Usually drop-off isn't a problem while the rental place is closed. There'll be a secure box for you to drop off the keys.

If you're coming back to ZH before evening, maybe you could pick it up the evening before - the rental is usually for 24 hours, starting from pickup.

Hmm, now I wonder, where would hire car places be based in a city with an airport???

Europcar @ Zurich airport is 0630-2330
(which appears to be standard ZRH opening times for hire car desks)

Re: Pick up car in Konstanz and drop off in Zurich?

What's this problem with renting a foreign car?

Before we had two cars I used to rent a second one when when we had visitors, from the FR side at Geneva airport. All i did extra was buy a vignette and save 50% on hire costs.

Do I need to report myself?

Technically its illegal if you are a Swiss resident, it is to do with customs. Whether it would be enforced I have no idea! Somewhere on the forum there are the details.

Potentially you can be fined 5 times the VAT & import duty for smuggling. It has happened, your not a tourist so can only bring items over the border within your 300 a day allowance. You can get special permission but you need to declare the car when you cross the border.

Driving license does not mater. As long as it is valid for driving in Switzerland.
What does mater is the place of residency.

Simple: If you are a Swiss resident you can not simply bring expensive stuff (anything worth more than CHF 300) temporary into the country. You need costums approval.

In case of a car you will need Form 15.30 (Costs CHF 20 or 30). In case of a forign rental car the form permits the use inside Switzerland for 5 to 8 days.

You can get Form 15.30 at the time when you cross the border. Using the car w/o customs apporval is considered smugling.

Yes, it seems to be dealt with very leniently by the police if checked by a patrol. But should still get you in world of pain and hurt if involved in an accident because it's an illegal car, so to say. Most probably you'll have to pay your own costs no matter what, and additionally also be liable for all the rest in most if not all cases.

Other than tax evasion, an administrative matter, no other law has been broken so I don't believe the car is 'illegal' in any way. This is why the police don't take any i interest as there is no money in it for them.
