Cost of car fees per year in Zurich

Hello

I am currently calculating costs of owning a car (maintenance costs, insurance, gas, parking costs etc.) vs using public transportation is cheaper. I don't have any experience of owning cars in Switzerland as I'm still learning to drive but I want to see how feasible it is. If the costs turn out okay then maybe I will find a nice used car and end my public transportation tickets. Currently I pay roughly 2'600 for my AG/GA per year, I commute everyday and I travel around Zurich every 3 weeks or so.

A car will never be the cheaper option.

...... comparing a single journey with 1 person in the car based on full per KM costs.

FTFY

Based on 10,000km per year the following are indications. They include maintenance, insurance, fuel, tax, capital outlay and depreciation but EXCLUDE parking costs. (They are not absolute figures and will vary depending on model specific costs!)

A cheap car (5k) is around 50rpn per km all in
A nice car (30-40k) is around 130rpn per km all in
A luxury car (120k) is around 300rpn per km all in

Cheap car based on 2yr ownership, the others on 4yr

It is worth remembering that you may argue paying more for a journey based on convenience and derived pleasure. Additionally once you have a car you'll have greater flexibility. There is never a wrong or right answer merely one that is most appropriate to you.

Finally fuel cost per KM as a % of total cost becomes minor the more expensive the car is

With fuel prices currently all time cheap, I would rather opt for a car

Let us know your findings. I'm pretty sure we all know the answer already.

Owning a car is quite expensive. It isn't only the fuel costs, there are insurance, tax, repair & maintenance, and parking costs. You might find that Mobility car sharing is attractive.

You can reduce your travel to work costs by buying a "Strecken Abonnemente" which is a weekly/monthly/yearly ticket for unlimited journeys, along a fixed route, of you choice.

You probably don't need the Abo when on holiday, so buy monthly, and then buy weekly when near your holiday time.

Re: Cost of car fees per year in Zurich

I think a lot of it depends on your lifestyle. Single folks will mostly be better off with public transport & Mobility. For families with kids, the answer depends on whether you live in the city or in the sticks! We were carless for a year, and used public transport and Mobility. But it was clear that we needed a car - my kids are social butterflies .

As for running costs, be aware that as a new driver you may incur higher insurance costs. Use comparis to find out ballpark figures!

You can find out about road tax on the STVA Zurich website.

Car park charges can vary between 100 - 150 Fr in most new built apartments. Again depends on where you live.

In all, it adds up quite a bit: if I lived in a more urban area and didn't have kids, I would have found another thing to spend my money on

Now I pay CHF1.20 (CHF1.25 minus 4-5Rpp coupon) for bleifrei 95 at Coop. Prices are approaching those from 20 years

Which is good news as salaries have not moved very much in that time.

I see, from this this thread it is starting to sound like public transport is preferable. Currently I live in the city but if I do get a car, I would be moving a little further out and save up on rental costs.

It's cheaper but possibly not preferable, there is a big difference.
