Question about owning a car

Hello everyone! I have a question, can I buy a used car in switzerland and change it to my ownership without a swiss permiss? Or do I need a permiss to have a license plate on my name?

Cheers

Re: Question about owning a car

To my knowledge in order to have a car with Swiss plates you need to be a resident. No permit = no resident.

It will be pretty difficult to get insurance without a permit, I´d imagine.

But then, how come you live in Switzerland and do not have a permit (yet)?

Edit: unless you want to export it immediately

Re: Question about owning a car

What do you mean by "permiss"? A permis de conduire (drivers license), or a residence permit, or something else?

I am here learning the language in a swiss school. It's a special case. But it does not count as a permiss.

Thanks for your answer.

Re: Question about owning a car

To register a vehicle in Switerland as a foreigner, a B or C residence permit is needed:

Notwendige Papiere für die verschiedenen Immatrikulationstypen

Neues Nummernschild für Neuwagen oder Occasionwagen:
  • Identitätskarte oder Pass, wenn Sie in Ihrem Heimatkanton leben; ansonsten
  • Niederlassungsausweis; Aufenthaltsbewilligung oder Niederlassungsausweis, wenn Sie Ausländer sind

As soon as you paid the car you are the owner. No further paperwork needed.
To drive the car you would need a license plate. To get the license plate you need a vehicle liability insurance coverage first, then you have to register a holder at the StVA. (The holder is liable for tax, road worthiness, insurance details, and minor traffic tickets).

Best ask the relevant authority if you could register yourself as a holder:
StVA Luzern : https://strassenverkehrsamt.lu.ch/wi...effnungszeiten

Considering you stay less then 90 days in Switzerland, I doubt you could register yourself as a holder. And if you could, getting an insurance may be a challenge.
But you will never know if you never ask.
