Family car?

Hi there,
We leave in Zurich city are slowly getting ready to replace our "mobility membership" with a family car (dragging a car seat and a pram is getting more and more annoying).

What car models are the most suitable for a family? The main criteria are trunk space, efficiency, easy to park. We have no preferences in models.

Any suggestions?
Thanks!
L.

Re: Family car?

How big is your family? Got a place to park it? What's it sole purpose (shopping, commute, weekends, vacations, etc.) and yes, how much you want to spend?

Re: Family car?

Rolls Royce Phantom is a superb family car - with plenty of space in the back and a good sized boot.
Although it does fall down on being efficient and easy to park.

The new Mini is brilliant - small, with parking sensors and reversing camera it is easy park.
Although it does fall down on having a small boot.

(The lesson here is ask a good question)

A good friend of mine swears by the Puch Pinzgauer 4v4. Loads of room, simple, mechanical engineering.

You might as well go for the Mercedes G63 6x6 in that case...

Mini is fine for boot space (as a family car - been there done that), as long as you don't get the convertible. HTH

Re: Family car?

A G-class is actually pretty good. Mercedes has improved it for 30 years, it's quite good looking and holds its value.

Alternatively, you could go for a Wagon Queen Family Truckster, a legendary family car.

Re: Family car?

If you stay with one child any car is good really, almost all have isofix compatibility in the backseats, seems to me like you're not really interested in cars so just get a cheap one at a comfortable garage. Stay with gasoline. Make sure there are parking sensors.
Random examples:
- skoda fabia combi swiss edition (station wagon so bigger boot, b-derived and cheap)
- some quirky french MPV (higher roof, more space inside in general, higher seating position most likely too). like renault scenic or citroen c3/c4 picasso
- any c segment car like the vw golf is probably enough anyway
- seat leon ST, skoda octavia, ...
- skoda superb, vw passat, ...

Re: Family car?

Honda Jazz. Impossible to beat on practicality and reliability. Bigger boot than a VW golf and Ford Focus. "Magic seats" so you can transport most things.

Re: Family car?

If you like cars, you could go for: Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Tesla
If you don't like cars, go for anything French, Japanese, Korean. It doesn't really matter which one of them as they all look the same. Go for the one with the biggest discount.
For great value for money: a Skoda
If you would like your children to become a forester: Land Rover or Subaru.
If you are in denial about having a family: Porsche or Alfa Romeo

FTFY!

Actually, those were my wife's first two choices before starting her shopping spree (three cars in six months).

The Porsche was 2/3 the price of the Alfa, BTW.

Re: Family car?

Whichever brand you choose, I would definitely recommend a kombi/estate/wagon car. Using a trunk is much more convenient there. Priceless thing when you have to deal with a little VIP passenger(s) and all the needed accessories (as from my own experience).

Also I would take amount of space in the rear seat as a criterion. It will matter for the parent travelling there next to the baby.

Re: Family car?

Find it somewhat curious that newbie L. has never come back to really say what exactly is desired for a family car. Just the same I'd like to provide the following link to some possibilities. Except for the crown vic it should be possible to obtain any of these great values in the CH.
