Driving License Excahnge -- Current license issued 10 months ago

Hi,

I moved to Zurich from California in January this year. While in California I had a driving license since 2012 however it was renewed in September 2015. When I went to the strassenverkehrsamt they said that the issue date is quite recent and just on the basis of my current license the exchange was not possible. I do not have a copy of the existing license which was issued in 2012. Two questions

1. What is the rule on how long I should have had the license for before I can exchange it?
2. If it is a year, can I simply go after September '16 to exchange for a new one?

Thanks!

I called up DMV and the only way I can do is by post (which I have already applied for) however I am not sure when, if at all, they will post me my driving history. Also in the process I figured out that there is no way to do this online, it just shows my most recent issue date in the online California driving history not the original one.

You have till January 2017 to exchange your license. Hopefully till then you got the needed document by mail.

If all fails you should still be able to get a Swiss license. Alltough, it will be a provisional one as you can not proof that you had your driving license for more than one year before you entered Switzerland.

Means you should not get a major traffic ticket (one which cannot be handled out of court), have to do two driving courses, and you will be subject to an alcohol limit of just 0.01%

The provisional period would be, in your specific case, ~18 Months.
(Caluulation: Normally 3 years - 1 year - the time you allready had your license before entering Switzerland)

Thanks aSwissInTheUS! I hope I get that information somehow.

Regarding the driving courses, do they involve the practical driving test?

No. Each is a one day (8- 9h) course. One focused on safety the other focused on economy. There is no fail, except when you do not attend them at all.

In europe the first issue date is always written, is this not the case in the US?

I can't answer for every state, but in most cases no. Only the date of issue and expiration of the current one.
