Where in Interlaken can I get my car's brake pads replaced, and should I?

I'm currently on holiday in the Interlaken area and my car's brake pads have worn out. I knew they were a bit thin but I wasn't prepared for all the braking with the mountain driving.

They are making an awful noise but from past experience will survive until I get back to England - but I'll need replacement discs as well as pads by then (expensive).

So I'm looking to get the pads replaced in the next day or two ("a stitch in time" and all that) but can't figure out from a fair amount of research on the Internet (I don't speak German) which of the vehicle companies in Interlaken sell cars and which mend them.

So I'm looking for suggestions of car repair places in Interlaken or nearby, and also for advice whether the elevated prices in Switzerland mean I may be better off just waiting until I get home.

Get the pads replaced there. You have to go back the same route to get home, but you'll be going downhill. If the scrapers are making noise now you'll risk trashing your discs, not to mention an accident.

Few places in Switzerland sell only, even the used car lots generally have a garage and a lift.. Ask at the tourist info or even the hotel you are staying at.

If they say "Ah, but it needs all new discs" then have a look at them, better yet take a pic and post it here.

Try to find a smaller independent garage, probably a bit outside of the CBD.

Screw the disks, do the pads, I have special disks for inspection.

Nothing to discuss.

Thanks for the advice; I hadn't thought of asking the tourist information centre for the nearest garage! The Grindlewald tourist office pointed us at the garage on the outskirts of the town; on looking at the pads, the mechanic said they were still more than 50% so the scraping noise must have been a stone or something. Anyhow, full marks for honesty. The pads he'd ordered could be returned, so the only cost was SFR65 for diagnosis and taking both front wheels off. The mechanic spoke excellent English too.

Now that's a bargain for 65 SFr

How come they can be both "a bit thin" and also less than half worn?

I guess the LOL is because in general you should be doing engine braking instead of loading up the brakes. I remember not doing that and completely cooking my brake fluid.
