Is there a legal requirement that all cars must have 3 point seatbelt in backseat?

Just wondering about this - it is school transport by car and the person doing the transporting has a fairly old car with just a lap belt in the middle back seat.

Does anyone know if this is still allowed? Thank you ...

It is only required if the car had them when manufactured.

This applies to front seatbelts as well.

Thanks. Yes this is the orginal sest belt so then you are saying it is legal. Just surprising given that this is a car used for school transport. It is just the middle back seat and has no spring back/elasticity so unless you spend minutes adjusting it from the last wearer (which the driver does not do) the belt is flapping around the child's tummy and extremely ineffective in a crash.

As Tom notes, from an MFK perspective, the technical requirements are only those that were in force when the car was new.

As far as I can see, the laws with respect to schoolbuses are that if there are 8 or more passenger seats then the driver needs an additional certificate. At any rate driver is responsible for making sure that the children wear the belts.

Have they crashed and provided you with proof of your statement?

It is also legal to have no seatbelts at all if that was how the car was sold (pre 1971 or so)

However, different rules apply in the case of buses, I saw something about that while at MFK the other day, but only for 8+ passenger seats.
