Placing radars just after speed limit sign on a highway

Dear,

It quite often happens to me the following. I am driving on a highway, and then there is some work ahead. Usually there is first a sign for speed limit to 100 km/h, and shortly after that a sign for 80 km/h. Also usually, I pass those signs with 5-10km higher speed, and then it takes me a couple of seconds to take the speed down to the intended one.

Now, I was wondering what is the Swiss police policy to put radars close to those speed limit signs.

Thanks.

Best,

I guess that if you are not paying attention to road signs you will get fined

They do that so that they can fine people who are not in control of their motor vehicle.

The sign does not indicate "80 somewhere past this point" it indicates "80, from exactly this point".

It isn't like the sign jumps up without warning. If you are doing the current speed limit, then at the point where you can see a speed limit sign lift your foot off the gas. Normally you won't even need to use your brakes.

Do you also slow down to the indicated 40kph on a sharply curved exit from the autoroute 'a few seconds late'? Think of these signs as exits and de-accelerate using the brakes as hard as needed.

Re: Placing radars just after speed limit sign on a highway

Leaving GVA on the A1, just after the exit for Geneva Lac, there is a speed camera box and not more than 10m further on a speed limit sign (reducing the speed from 100 to 80). i.e. The speed at the camera is 100, 10m later it's 80.

The idea is to get people to slow to at least 100 for the curve in the road. It usually works.

I slow down before the curve , but that is something else. It is simply dangerous to go with high speed there, no matter whether signs says one should slow down or not. In my case the road was straight and quite clear, but a bit ahead it was a bit narrow because of the construction site. And, I was mentioning a highway, not a curved route. Anyhow, I guess I will know the answer in a couple of days.

I *did* slow down. 10 seconds before the sign I was driving 120km/h, and at the sign 85-90 km/h, while still slowing down to get to 80.

In other words you were breaking the speed limit before, at, and after the sign.

You are at least consistent. The police will send you a congratulatory notice.

How is that I was breaking before the sign?

Nah.. I usually drive in eco pro mode so when I lift off the gas the car coasts, or even speeds up if there is a slight gradient.

Well just to be contentious one of the things that really pisses me off about driving on Swiss motorways is people who brake when they see a speed limit sign. Sure, if you want to slow down that's fine, but please do so in a planned way, meaning you don't need to brake and cause a concertina of braking cars behind you, and please also move over into the RH lane instead of sitting there at the same speed blocking both lanes.

That i can cope with, i think, what really gets my goat is when your all crusing along at 120kmh and suddenly everybody brakes, passes the radar camera at 110 kmh then speeds back up to 120kmh

Ooops, just realized that I was using "highway" to refer to "motorway", i.e. to refer to https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...tobahn.svg.png. It does not matter much, but that was a misuse of the word. Sorry.

Thanks. But I think it is forbidden in Switzerland by law. Anyways, my goal is not to cheat the radar system, but sometimes you just do not pay attention to the speed-board, and before you check it again the speed is a bit above the limit. So, I am more concerned about the policy of Swiss police.

I think that's the point of the speed cameras. They are there to catch people not paying attention. Presumably they place the cameras in places where research shows (or just a notorious stretch or bend) people aren't paying attention.
