Help! Serious Speeding Offense + Another Ticket

Hello all,

I recently moved to Zurich and am living here on a Permit L Visa.

In the last month, I rented a car and received a traffic violation for going 43 km/h the speed limit (123 in an 80 km/h zone). Not that it's an excuse, but i was confused about the speed limit in the area, which is why I was going so fast.

I have been summoned to court for this ticket and will have to present before a judge in the next couple of weeks.

However, I have just received another ticket from the same time that I rented a car! This time for going 12 km/h over the speed limit in a 50 km/h zone. I have been fined 250 CHF for this ticket, and the rental car company turned over my name and address.

I was wondering... will this second ticket be considered during the trial of my first ticket? Or if I just pay it within 30 days, will it not be considered (and thus make the outcome of my trial worse).

Thanks in advance.

it has happened and the OP didn't cause an accident.
with 43 km/h over the limit, the OP will be punsihed anyway and doesn't need to be lynched on EF

Yeah. I actually made a conscious decision NOT to drive at all in Swiss.
I used to do some professional drag racing and have the need for speed.
I would probably be safely locked away by now.So only public transport for me.
Keeping me out of trouble.

Re: Help! Serious Speeding Offense + Another Ticket

I'm not sure. I presume that the judge will see all tickets when he reviews your case, you are lucky that 12 over in a 50 doesn't entail a summons.

I am guessing that you won't be renting a car for a while, on the one hand because you won't have a driver's license, on the other because you will be paying off a rather hefty fine.

All I would say is take extreme care when driving around here as many of us know. Unfortunately I received a bill for CHF 630 for crossing the solid white line. That is also deemed a serious traffic offence.

Re: Help! Serious Speeding Offense + Another Ticket

We have a big thread here about speeding and the penalties:

Serious Speeding - the law, the fines.

If I read the chart in the first post of that thread correctly, you should expect to give up 60 days of pay as a fine and also pay court costs. Also reading the chart it looks like you will lose your license for a while. My German isn't good enough to determine from the relevant links whether this offense is "bad" enough to wind up in the criminal record. Perhaps ASwissintheUS can help with that bit?

I don't know if the second ticket will come up in the court proceedings for the first, but it could. At least it's a less serious offense. Paying it promptly can only be in your favor I would think.

BTW, you might get quite a negative response here on EF, but hopefully not the lynching that k and e is predicting. Still, imo at least a little ribbing is justified. 120 is the limit for a freeway/autobahn. If you can't tell the difference between what's a freeway and what's not then maybe a break from driving is not a bad idea.

You can expect a huge fine, a driving ban of at least 3 months & a criminal record. The 12 over the limit won't be an issue as small fines are not recorded.

Re: Help! Serious Speeding Offense + Another Ticket

If it's your first serious offence you should get a smallish fine around a grand, 3 month ban and two years suspended sentence if you do it again they will throw away the key.
