Pram/Wheelchair Access on Public Transport in Zurich

Its vey difficult for my wife when she is on her own to lift our son is his pram when she is pregnant onto a tram or train... I can't understand why these trains are designed in such a way, with often 3 steps up, and the many of the stations don't have lifts. Thankfully she has come across some very helpful people here, but it is difficult to rely on there always being people there to help.

There are some new trams (S7 and S14) and occasional train stations with lifts but would be interested if anyone out there can provide any tips and information on new pram (and wheelchair) friendly stations and transport.

Look forward to seeing any replies, which will I'm sure be of use to many others out there.

In my opinion, SWISS railway and local bus systems are really one of the BEST or THE BEST in the world.

I have been living in Asia and travelled to some Europe cities, and I certainly have been through 2 pregnancies (my wife actually).
They are no where compared to Swiss systems.

Some trains (with bicycle cabins) actually have flat entry from the platforms. Some buses actually squat down during stops.

Besides this, most SWISS and people living in Switzerland, will not stand idly by, when they see a pregnant woman with another pram.
Sometimes, the bus driver will even come down to help.

Therefore, I hope you will see positively that this country and transport system are actually in support of your pregnant wife and kid/s.

One more thing: don't make the same mistakes as many other pregnant and child-raising parents who blame everything is against them. There is a majority of "customers" which the transport system is supporting. We are the minority and we should be glad already and no need to demand more and more.

Like I said, I have been "mental modelled".
Could some admin god delete my posts 24 months ago? (of course not)
But some guys here read those, like it was yesterday (most of them are anti-neighbour rants).

I am older, got no time to be biased.

Swiss....they are good. At least they don't call me names, or analyse me. Wait a min, they don't even talk to me!
Aarrggghhhhh!

That is why I am still here, 8 years and counting.

To be absolutely CLEAR, I am not anti-swiss.

Hmm, I agree that Swiss public transport maybe the best at scheduling and being punctual. But Swiss services for disable people, pregnant women, women with prams can't be compared with services in Sweden or Scandinavian countries. Even the digital notice of coming tram/bus at bus stops or online shows you which one has low floor for wheel chairs or prams.

I have seen a woman with a twin pram had to wait the next tram as no one helped her to lift the pram. That's the only thing I am annoyed and I don't understand why one of the BEST of THE BEST local transport systems in the world doesn't have a friendly support like that.

Anyway, we still have to travel by train, bus, tram, ship, there are some new trains (S7, S14, S15), new buses (31, 80, some postauto, ...), new trams (4, 9, 11, 6, 10- not new but has low floor in the middle). That's all I've known.

Take care...

Re: Pram/Wheelchair Access on Public Transport in Zurich

New Zurich trams have low-floor easy access. These are progressively replacing the older ones. The new trams are longer. Hence, cannot be deployed on certain routes, which have length constrained stops or end-stations. Facilitating access for the disadvantaged can be a problem for a longer time.
