Importing Honda VTX1800

I am moving to Lausanne area sometime before the end of the year, probably around October. I am trying to decide whether to bring my bike or not. Bike would be covered in relocation package so transport cost is not an issue. I have had bike since 2005, so VAT is not an issue.

But what about driver's license needed to ride bike in CH? I have a motorcycle endorsement on my US license, so license to good for both car and bike. When I convert my US license to Swiss License, will Swiss license be good for both car and bike. I have read a lot if info related to having to take driving course in Swiss. But does this apply even if you are licensed to drive bike in US?

Also how many months out of the year can you ride a bike in Lausanne area?

probably
did you search and find the sticky in transportation?
I'd guess at 9 months of the year. If you are ok with the cold.

When you are here, with your Honda, give me a buzz...I ride the VT1100 ACE.

PS: One fellow I know, rides the GPZ900 without any license for the last 3 years...no problem at all.

I did read through the transportation thread, but I did not see anything specifically related to my question if I will be granted a Swiss motorcycle license based on the fact I currently hold a US motorcycle. Can find information regards to car license, but not motorcycle.

I know. But I like to ask the obvious questions that have the obvious answers

Entitlements are transferred one-to-one if they match. But let's keep that quiet for now....

Re: Importing Honda VTX1800

Lob, TomCat, Hat,

Thanks for the info, good to know that my motorcycle endorsement will transfer to Switzerland. One less thing to worry about.

As far as US bike meeting Swiss standards is another thing. Everything on the bike is factory, so I guess just need to make sure that it will meet Swiss standards. The speedo already has both mph and kilometers. I am going to call Honda customer service next week to find out if the Bikes sold in US will also meet Swiss/European Emissions Standards. I read something with regards to head lights, what does this pertain to, Type of light, angle of light or both??

If anyone has any info with regards to specific items that are checked to certify if bike meets Swiss standards it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Importing Honda VTX1800

After everyone scaring me to death about speeding tickets, I have decided to leave my GSX1300R at home....I had thought it was a good idea for when I visit Germany but....

No, the real reason that it is staying at home when I move is I will be in CH 60% of my time. No need to move the bike...

Re: Importing Honda VTX1800

OK, called Honda America, but they would not give me any information with regards to what is different, if anything, between VTX1800c manufactured in USA compared to VTX1800c manufactured in CH/EU. They were basically no help at all. Only thing they would give me is a letter that says bike meets USA EPA standards at time bike was manufactured. Lot a good that does me. I am trying to figure out if it is worth taking bike to CH when I move.

Can someone that has imported a Honda from USA to CH let me know what issues you had, what modifications you had to do. Also, if you know if parts for USA vs CH manufactured bikes are the same and/or available locally. (important to know if repairs are need in future).
