The best travel option for a low budget student

Hi everyone, sorry for the repeated intro to these threads if u have read my recent posts.

I'm moving to Neuchâtel on Friday and will be needing to a train ticket from Zurich. I'm looking for the best/cheapest ways to use the trains in Switzerland.

Since I will be there for a year, I was told to at least get the half-fare card. Are there any better solutions? I will be living in Neuchâtel during the year and so my travels will be for wkend trips whenever I get the time.

I saw the price for a junior abandonnement, but it seems like an expensive option for people only traveling on certain wkends. I hope to make some trips to Paris and see part of Switzerland. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Try reading Fact Sheet 2 -- Swiss Railways. An excellent overview of your options, with lots of information in the follow-up posts.

Check out the Gleis 7 pass - available if you're under 26 IIRC, only 100 CHF more than the half-fare card but also gives you free travel after 7pm (see link in fact sheet linked above). Also, try using click and rial on the SBB website - you can get discount tickets on certain routes at certain times, and they are bookable up to 2 days in advance. The day-passes can work out to be a good deal for doing a lot of travelling in one day, if starting after 9am or on weekends, they are only 56 CHF I believe, but can be even less if bought through your local commune (see this thread), and are often on discount throughout November (see this thread).
