Velo Vignette: A few questions...

Okay, now we all know if you ride a bicycle around this place it has to have one of those fancy little stickers you have to buy every year. Now I have a few questions:

For what is it for?
If insurance related, what does it cover, and what not?
I have heard racing style bikes don't require this sticker. If not, why not? And what do I need then if I ride a racing style bicycle?

Help here would be appreciated.

all bikes need them and 2005 vignette is valid until May IIRC.
It covers 3rd party insurance and Migros have the cheapest ones.

Cops will check that you have one if you get stopped (and fined for riding through Stauffacher

)

3rd Party in this case is both personal and effects and you can often find them on special offer ie for nothing from shops like Denner when you spend over CHF 50.

I think that you have to have an vignette when your biking on the street/public.
I'm not sure but I would say some racing bikes are beeing biked in special areas and that why you wouldn't need this permission.

Just to save me a trip to the post office, does anyone know if last years (2007) is valid until May or should I go and buy a new one for our daughter's bike today - seeing as it is 2008?

Does anyone know whether I need to purchase a velo vignette for my son's bike?
He's three and it's one of those ones without pedals but with front and rear brakes. He only uses it on quiet roads and footpaths and I suppose he probably has the potential to cause an 'accident'?

According to the bike shop where we bought our son's bike kids don't need one till they start primary school. Until them they are covered by your insurance.

You should have one per bike. But, since I use the mountain bike so rarely now (why bother when the road biking is so awesome and the trails are always muddy?), I haven't bothered getting one for it this year.

AxA state: "muss am Velo angebracht sein. Unter dieser Voraussetzung ist auch das Wechseln einer Vignette zwischen mehreren Velos erlaubt."

Explicitly: You can have 1 sticker for many bikes. But it must be on the bike you are riding.

I guess it's one per bike, but you can buy 'special' plates to attach the sticker to. Some of them are clip on/off, you therefore could switch this from one bike to another easily. Whether this could invalid date the insurance, I could not say.

I did not say it is legal to do so as I am not sure either way.

Hi there, my son is 4 years old and before he started riding his bike i asked the police if he needed one of these stickers on his bike and they said yes....(this was over a year ago)

I think it's safer to have one incase something happens than not to have one and think my insurance covers it.....after all there not expensive....

When we bought our new bike for our daughter a few weeks ago we got a vignette for free

. Still have to buy for the rest of us yet, so we can go on family bike rides

Goldtop's link and other sources state this.

Still if you don't think that installing removable plates is worth the effort or if you are forgetful, one sticker per bicycle is the better solution.
