Which side of the road to drive?

Hi

I am going to be relocated to Basel very soon. I plan to lease a used car till the tim I am there. I want to know:

1) Which side of the road do we drive there? I am used to driving a righ-wheel car on the left side of the road (opposite to the US system).
2) Do I need a separate driving license or an International driving Permit will suffice?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Re: Which side of the road to drive?

you need a proper licence to drive. I hope you have one.

Plus you might want some refresher tuition. From your question, I'm glad I'm not living in Basel.

The big green things always have priority btw (trams)

Like the rest of continental europe people drive on the right here (usually with left hand drive cars!!!, I seem to be the exception having brought my car from Ireland with me!).

Thanks to a short-arse left-handed French megalomaniac dictator.
Not Chirac, the earlier one called Napoleon

1) They are generally quite liberal in Basel, so you drive on whichever side you look best on.

2) It is always better to separate the license from the vehicle. Once you have done this, you can exchange it for a Swiss one - provided your one is from an EU country or one that has an arrangement with Switzerland to exchange licenses.

But if you see a large pink pig on the back end of one, the object is to hit the pig as hard as you can without driving through it.

Hey Guys,

I think he asked it very seriously and looking to the risk involved in the misinformation, I would say it is an important thread (more for the people in basel though )

If you have driven a car in US or UK then it is fine. Still you can go through the driving rules. When I did the driving course here I got a book in english as well. Take a few lessons, like 10 or something and then get to the road...

Meanwhile try this.

He seriously asked which side of the road people drive on? If it's the 'wrong' side for him, will he not bother driving? That's the only choice he has in the matter.

Yes it was very foolish of me to give such vital information in such a flippant way. What of course our enquirer should do is just before starting off each day, take a moment to note which site if the road the majority of drivers are utilizing - and simply follow the herd.

If it's an early start, it is recommended to wait until at least half a dozen vehicles have passed to ensure the correct side usage. Naturally if this sample is 3 of one side and 3 of the other, then wait for more conclusive results...

LOL
Alternatively, why not start a new craze by using the Twister spinner to determine which side of the road to drive on and see if anybody else follows suit.

It proved nothing can beat a FORUM-VETERAN though, especially suggestions and advice.

I disagree. In case of an early start and an absence of traffic, he can simply driver on whatever side he pleases. Or in the middle.

Re: Which side of the road to drive?

Hey amit if you're not sure which side of the road you're supposed to drive on - I seriously suggest you use the public transport only - trams and busses etc. - they are really very efficient.

If you still think you need a car - maybe you could take a few driving lessons before you actually get on the road on your own.

here's more info. about the licence:-

Re: Which side of the road to drive?

This truly one of the scariest threads I have every read, and I am truly grateful that I do not live in Basel. This must surely be a wind-up!

Anyway, for what it's worth, the side of the road you will occupy, if you don't know which side to drive on, will be 10' (3m) UNDER it!

Get a bike! And, follow all the other bikes ... well ... most of them!

They drive on opposite side from where you come from.

Yes, if you're relocating then you have exactly one year + 200.-CHF to convert your driving license to a Swiss one.

Merci auch!

It seems that the people with Indian sounding names love to use the term "I Want"!!??!!
