[International Driver's license] Where to get one short notice?

Does anybody know where I could get an international driver's license short notice in Zurich? What if the license I am converting is not Swiss?

The Swiss drive on the right-hand side of the road. Seatbelts are compulsory for all passengers, including passengers in rear seats.

The minimum age for obtaining a driving license in Switzerland is 18.

You need to apply within a year for automatic conversion of your current license - otherwise you have to take a driving test. If you provide your nationality, and how long you've been here, others can assist you further.

Motor Vehicle Office: Uetlibergstrasse 301, 8045 Zurich, 044 468 31 11 for more details.

You can do it all online nowadays.

Don't forget, you are not converting your license. You must carry your current license along with the IDL.

You can also get an international drivers license at a TCS office. Although I don't know whether they will give you one for a foreign drivers license.

What's a TCS office? I have a friend who is going to the US next weekend for a conference and needs to rent a car. Can they get an international driver's license in Switzerland directly? The other option is to have it rushed delivered from the US. They have a Swiss driver's license if that helps any.

Also, does anyone know if there is an extra fee when renting a car in the US with an international driver's license? They found good deal to rent from JFK with Swiss but I don't know if they will have to pay an extra fee or not.

Thanks!

You don't need an international driving license to rent a car in the US - your Swiss license is fine.

International Driving Permits (IDPs) -- like carnets de passage en douane and international car registration documents, neither of which I have seen in decades -- are needed for few countries. I was once refused a hire car in Japan because I didn't have an IDP, and I understand they are useful for other countries with non-Roman alphabets too. But their importance is exaggerated by fraudsters and scammers who sell them on the Internet: http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/...fety_1179.html

Re: [International Driver's license] Where to get one short notice?

The scammer-promoted IDP myth is one of my favourite examples of optimism prevailing over reality. "Really? It's a document issued by the United Nations that gives me the right to drive anywhere and can't be endorsed or revoked by anyone? And I can get mine for the low, low price of $19.95? Why doesn't everyone just have one of these rather than going through that tedious driver licensing process and taking a scary test?" - Why indeed...

Almost as awesome as the people who claim that if you own a US flag with gold fringing on it you don't have to pay any tax. Or something.
