Hi I have a 15 year old VW Golf and need to change the disc brakes can anyone recommend any cheap mechanic in Zurich or is anyone on this forum a mechanic and can do the job for a reasonable rate?
Discs and pads is really not a major job. Actually better to do together.
Used to have a carbon tubbed F3 car so not mechanically inept. Did the job on a few road cars too.
You shoud buy the parts yourself. Get a Haynes manual and do the job yourself.
I know it is Toyota but the technology / methodology is exactly the same. If having looked at it and you don't like, go spend 200chf on labour and a mark up on the parts.
My poor Audi has just gone kaput, and by the looks of things its a new gearbox.
After witnessing a friend of mine being fleeced by a main (D)stealer id rather go on recommendation or someone on here if poss! Thanks.
Re: Recommend a mechanic? IN Zurich/Oerlikon pref!
Thanks they seemed helpful but like most garages they wont quote me over the phone. I know it needs a gearbox swap. But they wont tell me until i drag the car down there. Chicken n egg.
Phoned 2 uk garages. Both calling me back with quotes
At least i found out their hourly rate. 180chuffs an hour Krist on a bike. Any other suggestions anyone?
Can anyone recommend a trusted mechanic [for a Volvo S60] in the Zurich area? I'm also open to a drive to Konstanz if it means I can save a few bucks.
I'm not looking for a dealer garage, those are everywhere and are typically the most expensive option. I'm looking for someone that runs an independent garage that I can trust not to rip me off.
I suggest to use this approach, as usually they try to f*:
I got tires changed at A-J Autosport (Schaffhauserstr 315); they have low prices, but might not be the best to trust.
I got my car serviced at Th. Willy AG Schlieren. The head mechanic was nice there, explaining everything in detail, etc, but at the end I somehow got huge bills
I also got some work (like brake replacement) done at Talacker Garage. Although they are friendly and possibly charge less compared to other garages, I still got the feeling that they rounded the final price to some made-up number. Though, they tend to do only what needs to be done, without coming up with extra stuff.
Yesterday I got my tires changed at ProAuto, as it is close to where I work and I could drop the car and pick it up easily. I made the mistake of not asking about the price, hoping it will be close to 100 CHF as last year. But in the evening, he asked for 130 CHF, which dropped to 100 after some protest. He's a nice guy, but price-wise not necessarily better.
I guess, I got the best prices from Foitek as well as friendly help, although they are a huge dealer for Alfa Romeo+Maserati+Ferrari.
Well, I guess the point is that... hmm, there is no point. I think it also depends on the personal relationship with the mechanics.

Carbody/Carrosserie recommendations for Zurich please...
Dear All,
Just clipped a concrete post in our garage today - scrapped the wheel arch - it needs doing professionally as not only did I scrape the plastic bumper ('fender' for our US members ) I dented the metal over the wheel arch as well! - soooo mad with myself
I wonder if someone has a car body shop they have used and would recommend.
Re: Carbody/Carrosserie recommendations for Zurich please...
Thanks for the heads up.
Yes I could just leave it but ...
a) it doesn't look too nice white scratches on the black body...
b) the dent in the wheel arch has broken the paint to the metal so I could have a rust issue in not too long, and that would not be too clever on a nice car :-)
Any other suggestions, it would be nice to get a few quotes to compare.
