Zurich Parking [Blue Zone info]

I'm contemplating buying a car. I live in kreiss 4 and contacted my property agent to check the availability of parking places.

The have one, outside some pizzeria a few blocks away from my building. They want 250:- a month for street parking. I find this ludicrous although I know there is no space in the city for cars.

Are there alternatives other than moving out to the boondocks?

Re: Zurich Parking [Blue Zone info]

I had to park in blue parking almost every day M-F for a year and only received two tickets.

It's a huge pain but I would set my card for when I arrived at work(9:00) then go out and change it a couple hours later..then after lunch (around 2:30) once again. I've found they only check in the morning and after lunch, usually once. If I was too busy to go out I would just take the chance.

Somehow paying 80 chf for two tickets in one year worked better than the 200 chf a month for a parking space.

Define boondocks.

Here in Kloten, it is CHF 130 for my underground space, or CHF 50 if I want an outside slot.

Around 15-30 mins outside of town in most directions will be similar...

Parking in Bern

O.K. sorry if I ask a really stupid question. I am about to rent an apt. in Bern and they ask me if I want a Garage or a parking spot. What do they mean by "parking spot"? Do they mean those spots marked in blue? Or is it something else?

Also, do I really need a "parking spot"? Can't I just park my car on the side street? (The apt is in a very very quiet residential area with wide enough streets so finding a place to do that shoudn't be a problem).

Could someone please explain this very confusing issue?

Also, what about parking in other places? Say, if I drive to a friend's house or apt, where do I park my car then? Just streetside? The blue spots?

Basically, what is the whole dealio with the blue spots?

Blueshrimp I've moved your post to a thread about blue zone parking, although it say Zurich in the title it's applicable everywhere. If you take a parking spot that will be a place for you to park your car that is dedicated to you where no one else can park.

Re: Zurich Parking [Blue Zone info]

Just some other info on Blue zone parking having just gone through it all.

You can get a 45 day blue zone parking permit free from the Verkhr's amt by the main library in town.
If you need to stay longer than 45 days then you can go back and buy a years parking permit, 180Sfr I think it cost me. You cannot extend the parking permit, you can only buy a years one.
If like me you only need it for an extra month you can send it back to the Verkehrs amt and they will refund you the difference.

As mentioned you need car ownership doc's, and the person who owns the car has to be the one to get the ticket.

Boondocks, well, come to think of it, if it involves taking public transport to get to the car, then it's in the boondocks.

I have found spaces in 8003/4 for 150 covered and 120 street-side.

Re: Zurich Parking - White Zone

This ALMOST got addressed in a post above...

White Zone. Zurich.
After the "parking meter" hours, (say 6pm), is it free to park in these white-zone spaces all night? Must move by 8am, of course, when the meter needs to be fed.

Is this right?

I'm living in the Neiderdorf and see LOTS of white-zone available later in the evening a short 5-10 min walk away. In fact, the parking lot between Bellevue & Opera House usually only has a few cars in it overnight.

I drive to the suburbs for work each day, so this seems like a feasible solution. Or am I gonna get a big old fine in the mail? (For parking infractions, are they mailed? Or left on your car windshield?)

Thanks

Re: Zurich Parking [Blue Zone info]

Yes, in many white zones parking is free during nighttime and weekends. Enjoy the parking on Theaterplatz as long as you still can, it will be replaced with a subterranean parking garage in a few years, with no free times.

Parking fines are put under the windscreen wiper. If the wind blows them away or the car owner rips them apart in anger, the same parking fine will be sent to him a few weeks after.

Re: Zurich Parking [Blue Zone info]

Thanks Nathu!
That's great news about "the white parking zone".
Sounds like you know the area:
If you were in my shoes:
- living near Niederdorf/Bellevue
- willing to walk/tram 5-15 minutes in any direction...
And wished to pay for a monthly garage parking place (public/private): Where would you look? Any thoughts?
- up near the university?
- down Seefeld?
- across center toward Enge?
- Langstraase?
- north of Central?
I've heard 300-350 chf near Bellevue.... curious how much cheaper I can get it by walking/tram 5-15 minutes.

Thanks,
Luke

Re: Zurich Parking [Blue Zone info]

I don't know about garage parking near the center but wow, 300-350 is rather much! We have a space in the half-public subterranean garage between the public bath Heuried and the tram stop of the same name. They have space for rent every now and then but no website and it's close to 20 minutes from Bellevue anyway. If you go away from the Limmat a bit I expect prices to be lower, 120-160/month sounds reasonable.

You can search for garage parking at some of the places that are recommended for appartment/house searches here, like Homegate. There's also a nifty service called Immoogle.

Re: Zurich Parking [Blue Zone info]

Just a footnote to this one folks (as I was just researching the topic myself) the Bluezone is not "free" on Saturdays! Its controlled 8am to 6pm, just like a work day.

Check it out here: (in German)
http://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/internet...ue_zonen0.html

And! its also illegal to just go back to your car and just forward the wheel without "driving your car back into the traffic" . Which is nuts. But good to know if you are about to do so before the eyes of a smug inspector.

blue zone parking - Zürich

We received our annual renewal notice yesterday for blue zone parking in Zürich, and surprise...the price was reduced by 25% (from 240 per year to 180 per year)... Apparently this is a result of Euro 2008 in the area, and the local commission decided there would be parking problems in the city during the summer, so they just decided to go ahead and reduce the price as a compensation... Unbelievable, and quite cool!

A word of warning.

We were fined for parking outside the blue zone between 6-6.30am (that's what is said on the ticket). That little mistake cost CHF 40.

There is a real lack of parking spaces in our street at night so lots of people were parking outside the blue zone and moving them before 8am.

The morning we got the fine so did a lot of other people!!!!

Not a happy street that morning.
Yes, the police is outstanding severe in Zürich.

I lived in Geneva for 10 years on a neighborhood in the center where it was allways hard to find a park slot.

After 7pm you could park on the yellow places with an X (reserved on workhours to charge and discharge ). Nobody had place me a penalty there in the 10 years living there, they don't even bother that you park outside the blue zone during the night as long as you take your car out before 8am and it doesn't block anybody, well that last one is tollerance, because it is clearly illegal.

But here in Zürich, the police come in the night and sundays to put parking tickets.

I went to a party once and parked on a yellow X spot and I got a ticket at 2 am ! That would never happen in Geneva as all yellow spots are filled at night, ( and even all the possible illegal places too )

I wanted to write back a complaint but I found in the parking laws that this yellow places are forbiden at all times.

Exactly the sort of reason why i love zurich!!!!

In london, they would do the opposite, they would find a reason to raise the prices by 25%!!!!

Anyone know of a map or can just generally tell me where the blue spots around Niederdorf or elsewhere in Kreis 1 are. I walked around today and all I saw were the white metered parking spots

Re: Zurich Parking [Blue Zone info]

Quick question regarding the blue zone and blue disks:

Can I park my car in the blue zone at night, set the disk for 08:30am and pick the car up before between 09:00am and 09:30am the next day? (as if I arrived at 08:01am)

In other words, would any traffic warden think that the car was parked there all night and I should have set the disk for 08:00am instead of 08:30am?

Re: Zurich Parking [Blue Zone info]

If you park past 20:00, you have to set the disk to 8:00 and leave until 9:00. Everything else is just gambling if the traffic warden controls until 7:59 or after 9:00.

Edit: It wouldn't be the city of Zurich if there wasn't a website about the proper use of the disk.

Re: Zurich Parking [Blue Zone info]

Hello,

I will live in Seebach until 7/31 from 6/15, so I do not want to pay the 240 CHF for a resident parking permit. Near the house where I will live, there are blue parking places. Do I get it right that if I park there only after 6 pm and leaves before 8 am teh next day I do not have to pay at all? I only need to purchase the disk? (where can it be purchesd and whats the price of it?)

Thank in advance for your help.
