Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

Hello volodymyr

So I just got back from the Strassenverkehrsamt
and took just one minute from my friend to explain in german "you folks screwed up this conversion" they agree , already took my B only license and I should be Receiving a Full A and B tomorrow or after tomorrow by mail (they say tomorrow but I doubt will be that fast)

if something happen on your conversion now you know what to do

Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

Hi Lob,

Did you pay any fine (if yes, how much) when they've discovered you had a foreign-plates car with your 18 months swiss driving licence?
How did it happen, did you receive a letter or they just stopped you on the street?

Thanks for the help.

Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

Take my congratulatons!

Govermental companies usually fix their mistakes quickly. Make sure you would not be double charged for their mistake, as there is no need for you to pay for two copies of license permit. The bill has to come a bit later.

Be careful, especially on R1, there are a lot of radars everywhere, + take into account those tiny details in Swiss Traffic Regulations which are a bit different from, for example, my country. I see quite often motorcycles at motoscout24.ch with reason "sell because of license withdraw"

Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

Hi

My god, this thread is so long now, and my internet is sooooo slow. So I'm just going to ask my question and I apologise if somewhere in here is the answer.

I live in Kanton bern and need to convert my drivers licence.

Can anyone give me a link to the form I need for kanton Bern? (I found the one for zurich)

Is the form available in english? I have an opticans appointment in the UK next week, would like to get them to fill in the form.

How much, excluding eye test does the conversion cost??

Thanks for your help

It's available in French and German. The sight test will cost circa 10 CHF and must be done in Kanton. Costs are included in the form.

Merci, I can't see the cost anywhere on the form, but I'll give them a call when I get back from England.

Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

Dear All,

I know these are not new questions, but would sincerely appreciate any feedback:

- Can I convert my UK Driving License without Practical & Theory tests?
Or Do I have to sit one/both of them tests?

- I have always driven RHD (Right Hand Drive) Cars, do I qualify for License conversion in that case?

- Never driven in countries with severe winters (Snow fall, etc), any recommendations on taking few lessons (driving); just to get acquainted with Swiss driving?

Thanks for your help & advice in advance.

Gautam

If you know that they've been asked before, why do you ask them again? You'll find the answers for the first two questions in this very thread.

You could either take one or a few lessons at a normal driving instructor, or a slippery road course at ASSR in Regensdorf.

(This question doesn't belong in this thread and will be moved if there is more interest in it)

A follow-up. I had to sent a request to the Lousisiana DMV and they sent me the avidavit from where I orginally took the test. I sent a copy of this with a letter stating what it was.

From Texas, my wife received a copy of the application she filled in the day she took the test. She also sent in her temporary license (the paper thing they give you the day you pass the test while waiting for the laminated copy). The temporary license has an issue date, which I guess met their requirements.

Anyway, that how we swapped our Louisiana and Texas licenses for CH.
We too are from the U.S., and when we originally sent in our current U.S. driver licenses to apply for Swiss ones, we received temporary versions. We were told this is because the issue date on our US licenses was too recent.

So I went digging in our files and found copies of our previous driver licenses (that we made for some moving/immigration requirement), which showed an earlier issue date (I think it was 2003). I sent these copies to the Strassenverkehrsamt, along with the temporary licenses, and voila - received permanant Swiss driver licenses in just a few days!

So it's a good reminder to keep copies of these kinds of documents around...you never know when they'll come in handy.

uae drivers license

Hi everyone !
apologies if this has been asked before... i've tried checking on the official website, but cant find an answer...
does anyone know if a UAE drivers license is ''exchangeable'' for a Swiss drivers license ? My daughter wants to take her license here before returning to Geneva next year, but we're wondering if its worth it since if she'll have to redo it anyhow she may as well just wait awhile...
Thanks in advance !
Debi

Re: uae drivers license

You should call the strassenverkehrsamt for the official answer.

On this, it says that the following countries are exempt from the control test:

Quote:
4.1. Wer ist von der Kontrollfahrt befreit?
Befreit sind Inhaber/innen von Führerausweisen aus einem EU-/EFTA-Staat: Belgien, Bulgarien, Dänemark, Deutschland,
Estland, Finnland, Frankreich, Griechenland, Grossbritannien, Irland, Island, Italien, Lettland, Liechtenstein, Litauen,
Luxemburg, Malta, Niederlande, Norwegen, Österreich, Polen, Portugal, Rumänien, Schweden, Slowakei, Slowenien,
Spanien, Tschechische Republik, Ungarn, Zypern sowie Andorra, Australien, Israel, Japan, Kanada, Korea (Republik),
Kroatien, Marokko, Monaco, Neuseeland, San Marino, Singapur, Taiwan (jedoch nur Kategorien A1 und B), Tunesien,
USA.
All others have to do it.

Phone and ask then post back and let us know.

Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

Hi!

Looked through all 16 pages of posts here and thanks to all for your great advice.

Was searching through + on the net if an international driver's license is needed for the first year for drivers who have yet to convert their license to a Swiss one? I hold a Malaysian driver's license and have had it for 18 years.

Any one from Malaysia or Singapore recently converted your licenses?

Thanks in advance!

in a word, no. International licence is merely a tool to allow dodgy foreigners who don't speak the language on the licence to understand the categories.

Having rented in Spain, Canada, US, UK, I can say there is no need to spend the 20 francs or thereabouts on one.
