Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

Hello.

As I explain here, my L permit is valid until this Monday and starting December 1 I will be working in Switzerland without having received my permit extension.

I entered the country on December 8 2008, so I still have less than 10 days if I want to apply for my driver's license conversion during the first year.
I am planning to visit the cantonal office of "Automobiles etc" on Monday and try to apply, except if you tell me that it's impossible to do this application on the day that my permit expires.

Do you know if I can do it?
Thanks in advance.

Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

Okay so after reading 34 pages, I have a question.

My Canadian Drivers license is also Identification that is Valid to enter the USA by land without a passport. It is called an Enhanced Drivers License and is a Valid WHIT - Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative document.

If this is explained to the STVA office, will they allow me to keep it as I use it as proof of Citizenship when visiting the USA from Canada? Or will they take it?

Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

From memory, the Swiss authorities do not take your Canadian drivers licence when they give you the CH one. It will be noted on the CH one that you used Canadian licence no. xxxx as exchange.

I recognize that you want to keep the Canadian licence to facilitate land travel to the USA but I am not sure that it will be valid after your move out of Canada. You might want to check the rules. It may be said someplace that you have to be a Canadian resident to use the enhanced licence as proof of citizenship. Normally the Americans will ask you where you live.

In any event, you can easily use your Canadian passport.

Go anyway, and explain, then do the exchange when you get the renewal.

Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

You will be required to give your Canadian License to the STVA to confirm its validity. About a week later you will get it back with a sticker on it saying "Not Valid in Switzerland". The sticker peels easily off, use your Swiss License when it arrives a few days later in Switzerland, and the Canadian one in America and Canada.

I got my Swiss License with an American License and this was the procedure. I have spoken with Canadians who have exactly the same experience. They STVA only holds (and returns to originating country) licenses from another European country.

In the Geneva Canton, they gave me my Canadian license back (unmolested), but told me I could not drive with it in Switzerland anymore.

Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

My son turns 18 while we are in Australia and he is planning to take a driving test and hopefully get a provisional license. In Victoria you are issued with a provisional license for the first three years which is automatically converted to a full license without any further testing.

Will he be able to drive on that provisional license in Switzerland?

I had to convert my license before I had been here for 12 months. Would the same apply to his new license? Or would the rules be different because he has already lived here for more than 12 months?

He'll hopefully go off to University somewhere within a year so we don't want to invest a whole lot of time and money into getting a Swiss license.

I have a stamp not simply a sitcker. Actually, I was told that category G in Ontario is higher than cat B here but I was given cat B. At least this was my experience.

not always true... I have currently 3 driving licenses because the Swiss authorities didn't keep my other EU license and didn't even stamp it that it is not valid in Switzerland

Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

Hello all of you.

It's me Dugi, and I had a question for you.

I am from Kosovo and I am here in Switzerland since June,
and I have a driving license from last authorities in Kosovo UNmik, and I came here and used this drivind license, I did not notice that this driving license was with date expired, It was only for 5 years,

I knew that I had to get back in Kosovo in order to exchange it, to get the new one with the Republic of Kosovo.

Suddenly I was pulled over by the Swiss Police here in kanton Sankt Gallen, And they said this is not a valid driving license, and I am not allowed to drive anylonger since I get a new one from Kosovo, and they also said that Unmik is not now available in Kosovo, and you have your own state and you were supposed to have a new driving license,
And they took all details about me,

My Question is..

Do they send me and fine? Or how much it will cost approximately, Or What will happen with me?

Sincerely
Dugi

Hi Folks,

1. Im within my first year coming in to Switzerland.
2. I have a US license, but it expired in January this year. Will I be able to convert it ?
I have a similar question... I have been here 4 weeks so well within the year but my US DL expired in July this year, only chance they will not notice and issue me a Swiss DL?

dopey you will need to go to the Strassenverkehrsamt and complete a few forms. Form? How unusual for Switzerland. And if you have a ZA license you will have to do a kontrollfahrt like I did this morning. I did the recommended thing and got a few lessons first and then did the test in the school car. The instructor/examiner was awesome, really a nice guy and in a good mood. He introduced himself and asked if I spoke high German. I said only very little so he said he would continue in English. We drove around for 20 minutes, 5 minutes on the highway and back to the Strassenverkehrsamt. All sorted. From the time I went to the Strassenverkehrsamt to the actual test date was exactly 1 month but it was over the December period so rather get there sooner than later if your license is getting towards the expiration date.

Good luck!!

P.S. Ignore me. Just too excited because I passed.

Re: [Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

Hello all,

I have read the entire thread but can't quite find a definitive answer to my particular question. Hopefully someone can help.

I am originally from Australia and have held a full drivers licence for around 17 years.

I moved to the UK (i have dual Australian/UK nationality) in 2002, but only got around to converting my Australian drivers licence to a UK licence in February, 2006.

I have now been in Switzerland since February 2009 and want to convert my UK licence to a Swiss one. However i have read on the san.vd.ch website that if my licence was issued after 1st December 2005, i will be required to take a test!

Can anyone tell me if there are any exceptions to this? For example, if i can somehow prove that i have been driving for the last 17 years (in Australia, the UK and now Switzerland), can i be exempt from having to take further tests in Switzerland?

Your advice, suggestions, or help would be greatly appreciated!

K

I had an expired license as well, although the person in the counter noticed it, she didnt have any issues.

Get your eyetest done and just show up with the license and fill the necessary forms. Good luck
